Tropfest 2009

I love attending Tropfest in Canberra. It’s one of late summer’s best excuses to pull friends together, spread out the picnic blanket and watch 16 great short films. This year the films were all very entertaining and the perfect weather made for a great night. I think the event organisers do a good job of highlighting the local sponsors and providing a fun atmosphere before the films begin.

But.

Can someone explain to me why the event organisers chose to have two tossers from local radio host a lame attempt at film trivia instead of broadcasting Tim Finn performing in Sydney? Really?

I will forgive the cock up during the Victorian Bushfire’s one minute silence… whether it was stealth advertising from TransACT or just someone not paying attention I will never know but Tim Finn- that I will not forgive.

[ED – The CT is having a gush all over local Duane Fogwell for finding “Tropfest glory” with his film NYE. A look at the actual list of winners has it right down the bottom picking up “Best original score” for the Sydney based Geir Brillian Gunnarsson.]

For those who missed them, the Tropfest finalists are now online here:

ED – No need to be nasty about the “gushing” from the CT. NYE was an excellent film and for it to be selected in the final 16 is outstanding enough.
Fact it won best score is impressive in itself as many films got nothing…

What happened during the minutes silence?

It was quite the co-ck-up… everyone was doing a good job of being quiet and then about 25 seconds into the minute a TransACT ad started playing on the big screen… then it paused for about 5 seconds and then started up again…

Once the ad had finished the crowd sort of laughed and gave up on the minute silence.

What happened during the minutes silence?

Couldn’t agree more about Scott and Nige being a poor and unnecessary replacement for Tim Finn. Also, a rule that would require late attendees to crawl on all 4’s to find a seat instead of getting in the way of timely attendees would be welcomed.

I would have thought Scotty should have been at a Jenny Craig meeting rather than Tropfest.

Bitchy, bitchy, bitchy!

Anybody who mentions their own name and the word “celebrity” in a sentence as often as that eejit Scotty does is bound to get up anyone’s nose.

Jessie Duck – i couldn’t agree more. In fact it was quite a huge topic where i was sitting. Was Tropfest not equipped enough to broadcast a live performance? Maybe Tim had been on the grog and the organisors deemed him unsuitable for national broadcast! That would be funny. I would have much rather seen Tim play than that half assed game. I was really looking forward to it.

Also congrats to Geir. A silent achiever. Good bloke too.

There weren’t that many smokes so it wasn’t too bad, still irritating though.

Have those two gits instead of Tim Finn, definitely a big mistake and the worst part of the night.

Oh my. That was my first Tropfest and first major event in Canberra. The setting was great, weather was tops and I thought it was well organised but Scott and Nige give me the irrits. Not only were both “games” lame (was the beach ball thing a game?) but they seem unable to actually host without referring to their notes every 10 seconds. Except for when one of them, I forget which one, kept saying “Epic fail”. Obviously regurgitates all of his jokes from articles on Facebook faux pas.

I agree that the smokers were annoying, but it is still legal and the government makes a killing from taxing it so there is not really much to be done I think.

I went to tropfest every year since it started at Stage 88 and watched it get progressively more lame.

This year I had the party at home with a large group of friends on Foxtel. We watched it delayed so we could fast forward through the ads and the interval. We even paused it in between one of the films as we were having a chat about the down syndrome actor.

No lines at the loo, no drunk prats talking behind you so you couldn’t hear the dialog. A great evening in all round!!

Sheepgroper, all 16 films will be on a DVD given away with next Saturday’s SMH 🙂

I also found it incredibly rude of some people to smoke in a situation where everyone was crowded together quite closely.

I didn’t bother going because I suspected there’d be smokers infesting it. Although I did like the Floriade shorts thing at night the smokers spoiled it for me, no matter where I moved to try and avoid them.

Hopefully the short films will show up on SBS sometime.

I just thought I’d add to this – Sydney based Geir Brillian Gunnarsson.

Geir was a longtime Canberra resident who was actively involved in the local music scene. From memory he recorded/engineered/produced Liquid’s first cd, and I’m sure he did a range of other stuff for Canberra musos, although the specific groups projects escape me.

He was also a regular at the Phoenix for many years.

Geir was definitely one of the most interesting and affable characters I’ve ever met (especially during his Hunter Thompson phase) and I’m glad he’s achieved a degree of success.

The red spring things would have done a better job hosting than those two twits. Can we not get the lovely Sibylla Budd to return to her hometown for an evening to host next year??

I didn’t read the CT article closely enough and thought the NYE film won the whole thing so was a bit disappointed. I thought the film that won was great. Agree that skipping the Tim Finn performance to have the 104 idiots was ridiculous. I also found it incredibly rude of some people to smoke in a situation where everyone was crowded together quite closely. Overall though a good night.

I would have much preferred Tim Finn to the inanity of those two clowns.

Why must local radio shite on anything good?

NYE was a very good film- it was definitely one that had us all mulling it over on the way home… haunting.
