Joy Burch has announced a little something for the big hat brigade at this year’s Multicultural Festival:

Australian country music star Troy Cassar-Daley is set to wow crowds at the 2012 National Multicultural Festival during this year?s spectacular Indigenous Showcase, Minister for Multicultural Affairs Joy Burch revealed today.

Ms Burch said it was quite a coup to secure Cassar-Daley as part of the festival?s impressive line-up alongside headline act, former Australian Idol alumni Anthony Callea, and “Shaddup You Face? singer Joe Dolce.

“Troy Cassar-Daley?s unique brand of country music and lyrics has endeared him to the Australian community over the past 15 years of his stellar career,” Ms Burch said.

“In March, he will unveil his ninth album called Home. We are hoping he will play one of the songs from it which has already been released and is fast becoming a hit – “Country Is?.

UPDATE 02/02/12 17:08: This from Joy Burch’s office:

Troy Cassar-Daley is performing on Sunday 12 February at the National Multicultural Festival (at 3pm as part of the Indigenous Showcase), not the Saturday as incorrectly stated in the earlier media release.

Doesn’t change the fact that it was a sh1t novelty song that is still embarrassing to listen to.

No argument there, just spreading the embarrassment around.

Joe Dolce? Ah yes, he was the one who had that vomitous song Shaddup You Face jammed at the top of the charts while the rest of the world was mourning the shooting of John Lennon in late 1980/early 1981. I still feel ashamed at the fact that while Lennon’s songs shot to the top positions everywhere else immediately before and in the months after his shooting, radio stations here were spewing out “What’s a madda you, hey”. If only we could wipe history of this song and Dolce with it.

According to Wikipedia, “Shaddap You Face” was number one in no less than 15 countries. It was succeeded at the top by Lennon’s “(Just Like) Starting Over” in Australia, and sandwiched between Lennon’s “Woman” and Roxy Music’s cover of Lennon’s “Jealous Guy” in the UK.

Hope that helps with the cultural cringe.

“Cassar-Daley was born in the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills to a Maltese-Australian father and an Aboriginal mother.”

No, I didn’t know that; thanks for enlightening me. I guess he makes a little more sense, although his content is still monocultural… unless I’ve missed something else…

Joe Dolce is an accomplished poet. For a short example:

I don’t know about his music at all.

While still trading on the success of ‘Shaddup You Face’, Joe has established himself as a serious and seriously good singer-songwriter with an impressive body of work. Both solo and with partner Lin van Hek.

I know multicultural festivals should include all cultures, but it does seem a little odd for an Australian multicultural festival to feature an Anglo-Celt singing a very distinctively Anglo style of music as a headline act… Not that there’s anything wrong with country, or Troy Cassar-Daly for that matter. But there aren’t many festivals that he wouldn’t be appropriate for; I’d be more impressed with something that was actually multicultural; although the only group that comes to mind who really fill that brief are the Chooky Dancers. And that’s not really what I had in mind…

Troy is an Aboriginal/Maltese and Anthony Calea is also of Maltese background …. Who was the “Anglo-Celt” your refering to

I’ll make sure to get to the multicultural festival after 5pm, just to be safe.

Are you talking about Troy? You do know he is Aboriginal don’t you?

This is great news – if you like country and western music.

Who is the western music artist that is coming? Troy Cassar-Daley is a country singer, not a western singer. Country and Western are actually two different types of music….. (waits for Blues Brothers comments)

The Anglo-Celt person referred to is former Australian Idol alumni Anthony Callea, not Troy Cassar-Daley. Could have fooled me as Callea isn’t Anglo-Celt.
There are actually two types of music I don’t like namely Country and Western. Country is about women, dogs and trucks and Western is about cows.

Multicultural? That’s like replacing meat on a stick with a meat pie.

This is great news – if you like country and western music. Isn’t Tamworth the place to have this?
And Joe Dolce? (cringe). What’s on at Cooma that weekend?

“Joe Dolce”? Yes quite a coup…

Was Jess Mauboy unavailable?

[…] as part of the festival’s impressive line-up alongside headline act, former Australian Idol alumni Anthony Callea, and “Shaddup You Face? singer Joe Dolce.

I know all those words, but that sentence makes no sense to me.
