Tuggeranong dirt bike bandits

For about 3 years now on occasion my wife and I are awoken late at night by the loud sounds of dirt bikes tearing up the footpaths behind our house in the floodways of Isabella Plains. Also in the day when driving I have seen them dangerously jumping off gutters onto roads in front of legitimate traffic almost causing accidents, speed locking at 60km in an 80 zone then zipping back onto the footpaths then damaging public grassed areas and dissapearing up alleys in the Isabella Plains, Callwell and Bonython areas.

I am presuming these two bandits are the same guys that always tear up the area (although I may be wrong – there may be different riders). Their dirt bikes are relatively small without number plates or rego and they usually wear helmets. These felons are really starting to give legitimate registered and licenced motorcycle riders a bad name and I am getting tired of them. They are endangering pedestrians and almost causing accidents. When I see them they appear to be the same two bikes and the riders are built like young teenagers.

I ran into them again today just outside the ActewAGL Greenway depot heading towards Callwell at about 5pm. They were using the roads, footpaths, foot traffic underpasses, ovals and grassed ares. I thought I would follow them home as on calling the local Police, they inform me nothing can be done without knowing who they are and where they live. I followed them all the way from Tuggers to Callwell but lost them on the roundabout outside the Callwell club.

Is anyone else terrorised by these bandits? Can anyone provide any information that we can give to police that may lead to an arrest?

Possibly. Sometimes it’s hard to tell a troll from a really stupid person though.

Arrests?? Teenagers being idiots on monkey bikes and you want them arrested? Seems a bit harsh mate. Annoying yes, but criminal proceedings?

How about a couple of warningg by the plod THEN crinimal proceedings? It is illegal after all.

Yeah, with Classified on that. They may just be being idiots but what happens if they mow down a kid on a footpath? Sad that Plod will rush out and arrest some poor freak who [allegedly] pokes a dead swan with a stick, but wont be bothered to investigate idiots who put human lives at risk…

The “poor freak” allegedly killed the swan. You think it’s sad that he was arrested? Get a grip. As far as investigating kids on pocket bikes etc, how would you go about it?

Concerned Citizen: Hi, there’s a couple of kids riding pocket bikes around my street.
Operator: Can you describe the bikes and riders?
CC: Not really. One of the bikes is black and rider has a green helmet.
Operator: Any idea where they live or who they are?
CC: No.
Operator: I’ll send a car around to look.

Car drives around, has a look, can’t hear it or see it, the end.

Then the police will just have to be a bit more inventive, won’t they…

Suggestions?

I think:

the police force would be a bit more pro-active and perhaps get a patrol around the general area at the times reports come in so that they can be on the scene quickly… Its called preventative policing.

Brilliant. Just have the infinite police cars patrolling the general area because all incidents occur like clockwork – at exactly the same time, date, and place every single time.

And police are never dealing with more important incidents.

BTW, do you know how I’d escape the cops on my pocket bike? Just ride up onto a footpath. See yaaaa!

allegedly killed the swan. Lets be realistic – probably more likely that he was poking it with a stick.

And as for implying that plod wont do anything if there is no chance of catching them really sets a poor precidence. Are you saying that they will just get away with it because they are one pocket rockets? A decent (well funded – I’m not saying the individuals are not decent!) police force would be a bit more pro-active and perhaps get a patrol around the general area at the times reports come in so that they can be on the scene quickly… Its called preventative policing. Rather than just waiting until someone gets killed and then opening a manslaughter enquiry.

Still with the swan thing? He wouldn’t have been charged with killing it if there wasn’t some evidence.

And as for implying that plod wont do anything if there is no chance of catching them really sets a poor precidence

Never said they wouldn’t do anything. I implied they would send a car to look for the offender.

Are you saying that they will just get away with it because they are one pocket rockets?

Pretty much. If no one knows who they are or where they live, how do you find them?

police force would be a bit more pro-active and perhaps get a patrol around the general area at the times reports come in so that they can be on the scene quickly… Its called preventative policing.

An extremely unrealistic suggestion.

Rather than just waiting until someone gets killed and then opening a manslaughter enquiry.

This has been a problem for decades. How many deaths can you recall? Manslaughter charge would never be used.

These bike riders are collared some times, but that’s when police actually see them and they chose to stop when the lights and sirens come on.

Remember when police cars used to ‘patrol’?

The reson this sort of anti-social behaviour occurs is because the ones doing it have no fear that they are going to get caught. Same as taggers, burnout merchants and vandals destroying park facilities. As a kid I regularly saw police cars just driving around my very quiet Evatt street. I asked my kids last week when was the last time they saw a police car in our street and they couldn’t remember seeing one.

I’m happy to pay an extra 5c per litre for fuel to fund coppers just to patrol. Not set up speed traps, not escort the Queen – just patrol.

If string line isn’t an option, how about spike sticks? Maybe some well placed little cats eyes style tread poppers? There’s plenty of ways to stop a bike.

So has a new trailbike park been opened up anywhere since the one a Narrabundah was shut about 15 years ago?

Did the government really expect riders to just sell their bikes and start going to floriade or something.

Thanks for listing the areas that I will now not live.

On one hand, it’s a valid complaint, and the little bastards are causing mischief.

On the other hand, you’re probably over 40 and have suffered shrinkage of your “fun” gland.

Given some of the stories I’ve heard from older generations relating to the fun they had when they were kids, with things like gelignite, guns, etc, I’d say you’re a bit of a whinger.

But, that said, I don’t have them hooning past my house when I’m asleep. Tell me, how do you deal with the hoons on the road outside of your house? Might be worth applying the same solution to the bike riders.

My man I am 30yo and my fun gland has actually swolen since I was a child. I ride a ZX14r ninja, top speed out of the box 300kmh. I am thinking about pulling my bike out of the shed and placing it just outside my front door everynight with keys and helmet at the ready. Next time I hear the dirt bike noises I will jump out of bed and onto my bike, and I swear to you – they will not be able to get away from me then. I am thinking it is my only option just to find out who they are and to pass the info on to Police.

I am all for fun – just not at others expense. And by letting them ride around the burbs unchecked – it may force pollies to make stricter laws restricting legitimate riders even more which I do not want.

@that_the I didn’t mean arrested – just for the Police to give them a slap on the wrist so they conduct their rides properly like everyone else and on proper dirt bike tracks in forests.

So has a new trailbike park been opened up anywhere since the one a Narrabundah was shut about 15 years ago?

Yes, yes, thy_dungeonman, I’ve seen all those posts about barking dogs and cyclists and chimney smoke and dogs off leashes and smokers and lazy pedestrians and ad infinitum. I guess I’m just a bit tired of all the whinging and regulation.

Perhaps it’s the amount of regulation and social expectation heaved upon us in Canberra, but I read this story and cheer. How liberated and alive the boys must feel fanging their bikes wherever they like. Soon enough they’ll be older and responsibility restricted by all the trappings of adulthood *sigh*. Let them have their fun while they can.

These aren’t some Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn engaging in harmless fun, these are thoughtless people (who we don’t even know are young they could be stupid adults) who are causing traffics hazards (the road isn’t a playground) as well as endangering people using the paths and creating obnoxious noise. How many times on this same site have people complained about barking dogs, cyclists endangering pedestrians or getting in the way on the roads and everyone seems to think that these are legitimate complaints.

I’ve seen quite a few of these types riding around the ovals near where I live and call me old fashioned (even though I’m from gen Y) but I despair at the idea that people can’t enjoy parks and open spaces in Canberra because of some motorized hoons who feel the need to ruin everyone else day to enjoy their own. I mean we have enough roads (and cars on them) as it is without also ruining the remaining areas where we can enjoy nature and relative quiet.

Time to put up a string line

A friend of mine who was riding home from work (legally) on his bike got caught in a string line set up by some kids. He had to have 2 surgeries, and there is a permanent scar. It’s not very amusing imo.

Time to put up a string line

I don’t care how annoying something like this is, NEVER put up a string line in an attempt to coathanger someone on a push bike or motor bike.

This is a great way to decapitate, or seriously injure someone. It’s an absolutely dispicable way to deal with the situation, and you’re an even bigger idiot than the guy on the bike.
.

I rather suspect injury and possible decapitation are the point of the exercise. As for being “dispicable” that depends on how much you value your peace and quiet,

+1 to matt31221.
-1 to people labelling this fun police whingeing.

We have a similar issue on the north side with kids using the streets, reserves and laneways on minibikes. I’ve been forced off paths by these idiots whilst I am out with my son in the pram. I have also lost count of the number of times they have hurtled out of a laneway onto the street infront of my car.

It often appears that their parents encourage this sort of behaviour with them egging them on as they do laps in the street. It’s bloody stupid and it’s dangerous. There are places they can use the bikes and they should make the effort to do the right thing.

I enjoy using firearms but I dont go down the park for target practice.

I’ve had friends that do downhill in Kowen forest experience this first hand from bushwalkers who think they have full entitlement to the paths (even the obviously worn and designated downhill tracks), and the result is terrible.
