Tuggeranong Hill television out of service?

Since yesterday’s storms, my set top boxes have had little to no reception from ABC, WIN, Prime or Ten from the Tuggeranong Hill frequencies. I can intermittently get these stations from the lower frequencies (which I think may be broadcast from Black Mountain?), but the Tuggeranong Hill frequencies have been offline since the storms.

I haven’t been able to find any information about why I would be having trouble on these broadcast frequencies; does anyone know if there is a problem? Or has anyone else lost their reception?

It’s been out of service again on most channels all of today. Must be the rain.

it had been struck by lightning

o_O!

Thanks all.

Just wanted to know whether it was just us. It was confusing because I could still get a signal (not as strong) from Black Mountain for most channels, and the Tuggeranong Hill signals intermittently returned then went again.

When I did decide to replace the antenna and removed the coaxial, I found that the problem was there; it had been struck by lightning and although there was no evidence from outside, the shield that separates the two axes of the coaxial cable had melted, so there was nothing separating the two axes. The antenna had also turned a little to the west (we’re almost due north of Tuggeranong Hill), so that wouldn’t have helped either.

At any rate, I had looked into TransACT but couldn’t find anything that I could be bothered paying for when I could get it for free. We have two twin tuner STBs and a DVD recorder with digital tuner, so I can record five channels at once and watch a sixth in the family room, and still never watch an ad!

Yeah it’s this fantastic new technology we get in Canberra.

I use this fantastic old technology called TransACT. No TV towers, no dropped signals, no antennas to check after bad weather, also, you dont get ads on every single channel at the same time.

So TransACT has finally arrived in Banks and Gordon has it?!?!? Last time I checked, it wasnt available. Sneaky devils! 🙁

For the OP, I think there has been previous threads on this topic on RA. Maybe you will find a related topic in the archives (search engine)

It’s most definately a problem with your antenna. I get good reception for all digital channels and I’m using an indoor rabbit ears antenna.

Certainly no reports of problems in Kambah – but then again we’re on TransACT.

TransACT – the Ozemail of the Oughties, the antipodean AOL.

ABC has been dodgy for me – went from crystal clear to dropping out. Indoor antenna, so wind not the issue for me.

Obvious question: Have you checked your antenna?
At many places I’ve stayed in Canberra (Once in Kambah), the act of wind upon an external antenna usually upsets reception at the time and can break/loosen things it upset it later.
Rain also is a big problem: Wet trees, roofs, hilltops, etc. can significantly diminish signal too (And that can last some time after the rain’s stopped).
Note that the Tuggeranong Hill repeater is a very low power transmitter compared to Black Mountain and really just there for those in the shadow of Mount Taylor. If you’re in areas like West Kambah (or if you just get better signal anyway), you might be better-off pointing your antenna at and tuning-to the Black Mountain transmitter.
