TAMS are warning that their ever popular “digging up the roads” is coming to the Parkway:

The ACT Government will be undertaking resurfacing works on the Tuggeranong Parkway from Tuesday 14 January to Friday 17 January 2014 resulting in partial road closures.

Works will be conducted on the Tuggeranong Parkway as follows:

— southbound lanes at the Hindmarsh Drive exit ramp on Tuesday 14 January

— southbound lanes between Hindmarsh Drive and Sulwood Drive on Wednesday 15 January

— northbound lanes between Sulwood Drive and Hindmarsh Drive on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 January.

Timing of the works is designed to minimise disruption. Works will be carried out between 9 am and 4 pm each day.

Speed will be reduced to 40 kilometres per hour and traffic will be restricted to one lane through the worksites. Delays are expected.

Motorists are advised to consider an alternative route to avoid delays in the predicted warm weather.

Coppins Crossing Rd near William Hovell Dr, Federal Hwy NSW bound between Majura Rd and border, Townshend St Phillip, Botany St Phillip, Gundaroo Dr Gungahlin (between Anthony Rolfe and Gozzard St) Bugden Ave Fadden (just done AGAIN because of terrible work) these are just a few certainly amongst many more where workmanship quality is nil.

The Federal Highway was done by the old contractor in the 2011/12 season, with rework the next year. Maybe this stuff up is what lead to Downer getting the gig.

Don’t know when the other roads you mention got resealed, do you recall?

Also should mention that the quality of the workmanship and clean-up seems to have gone up

If you are not trolling, you seriously need to get out more.

Actually no I am serious. Give someis examples of roads done by Downer (who think are into their 3rd year doing the seal in the AwACT) that have shite workmanship? Now not talking chip V’s hotmix, just the quality of their work?

No doubt it will be another cheap half arsed chip seal job that will waste our money because it will need to be done again in 2 years time because it will wear off and become dangerous again.

Plenty of chip sealed roads that last more than 2 years. You only need to look at the annual list to see that far less than half the roads in the ACT are resealed every year, which would be the case if they needed sealing every 2. Yes there are some bad sections that don’t last, these are the exception rather than the rule.

Also should mention that the quality of the workmanship and clean-up seems to have gone up since Downer got the contract.

Pirman street in Tuggeranong has gullies in it the size of Ayres rock from the crapseal. Where as most of belconnen is smooth hox mix.

Ayers Rock cannot possibly be used as a unit of measurement for anything especially the depth of gullies.
Nor are Sydney Harbours, Olympic swimming pools or football fields units of measurement…

Well, it couldn’t be as bad as what I saw in the Tumut paper not long ago, where a semi crossed up all over the road because the tar melted, to the extent that the truck tyres were spinning up and it lost traction going up a hill on Gocup Road. Their solution was to dump more gravel over it. I wonder how many roads will bubble up in the conditions we have this week.

Going by the state of the roads in Florey it will need it soon.

Very soon, in fact. Re-sealing of some streets start this week. (Based on the schedule, Ratcliffe and Summerville Cres will be done this year.)

Leaving aside the “cheap half-arsed” comment, no it won’t be chip seal resurfacing but “ultra thin asphalt”. Please forward your apologies to Gary Byles.

Refer to the schedule here: http://www.tams.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/485486/Road-resurfacing-program-2013-14.pdf

It’s strange how the ACT government persists with this cheap-jack chip sealing. I drove to Yarrangobilly Caves on Saturday and the road within the Kosciusko National Park was smooth as a baby’s bottom. In fact as soon as you crossed into NSW past Williamsdale the road suddenly became much smoother, much like the roads we used to have here several years ago before self-government. Certainly a historical turnabout to now have surfacing on NSW country roads much better quality than in the ACT.

“Timing of the works is designed to minimise disruption. Works will be carried out between 9 am and 4 pm each day.”
Minimising disruption would be more effective had they decided to work from say 10:00PM to 5:00AM

“Motorists are advised to consider an alternative route to avoid delays in the predicted warm weather.”
So for Belconnen folks, going through the 40 zone on Coppins Crossing Road is a faster alternative exactly how? If you were heading to Woden, I guess you could turn off at Cotter road and go toward Adelaide Avenue, then turn right at the lights and go through Curtin, winding your way through the back streets with their roundabouts and speed bumps. Are the roadworks still ongoing on this stretch?
A third alternative is to go right at Cotter Road and meander through Weston Creek, but I think there might be some roadworks there too, before you get to Streeton Drive.
How about going all the way around LBG and taking the Monaro Highway through to the back end of Hindmarsh? Oh yeah, lots of roadworks out near Duntroon……
Just have to put up with the delays folks, there is no easy way out.

What a load of BS. I cannot think of one main road in Belconnen that is devioid of chipseal, though yes parts of say Gininderra Drive have small sections of hotmix, but only because they rebuilt a few intersections for Lawson.

With the exception of maybe Florey and Dunlop most of the suburban roads have chipseal too, though generally it is a much finner seal that many would be hard pressed to notice. Going by the state of the roads in Florey it will need it soon and Dunlop within the next few years.

Now you are not confusing Belconnen with Gungahlin by any chance? If so then the reason why most of Gungahlin is hot mix is because the roads are still new. Though it is now starting to appear in the older suburbs of Gungahlin as they have hit the magic age where they need maintenance. Except for a few estates in the deep south most of Tuggernanong is chip because of the age of the roads.

Could go either way, the resealing they’ve done on Wentworth Ave is superb… for the short distance they’ve done. (Seriously all the work to do a relatively short portion of the road, I thought they were going to do more than that)

Wentworth Ave required a different method to elsewhere in Canberra due to the fact it is one of only two roads I know of in the ACT with a concrete slab base. The other being just around the corner on Brisbane Ave, though Brisbane Ave doesn’t have hotmix on top.

With Wentworth the core issue, which took time was they had to stabalise the concrete slabs, otherwise when resurfaced within a short period of time you would get the clickity clack from the joints between the slabs due to movement.

Yeah those are good points. And they make it all the more perplexing why they didn’t just get the whole road over and done with. That stretch that is done is a joy.

I remember when our Annual Rates used to pay for hot mix resurfacing.

Those were the days.

Agree with you overall sentiment, but the above statement, when did your rates ever pay for hot mix resealing? Chipseal has been used in Canberra since at least the early 80’s.

I’ve got this strange feeling. Feels like another half-arsed screw up that’ll disrupt traffic for no reason then need resurfacing in a year or less.
Are they going to do all the sections that need work, or just one 10m stretch then pack up and go home?

Shhhhhhh, bd84. If you want better resurfacing of roads and the ACT Government actually listens and acts, they will probably quadruple all our Annual Rates, instead of just trippling them. I remember when our Annual Rates used to pay for hot mix resurfacing. Those were the days.

If the trippling of Annual Rates really is “revenue neutral” as claimed by the Gallagher Government, what will they use for resurfacing roads in, say, 10 years time ? Go back to dirt ?

Still, ACT voters voted them back into power (courtesy of Rattenbury) I suppose, so we shouldn’t complain really because they are just continuing on their merry way.
