You might know him as Ragnar Lothbrok from Vikings, but when Travis Fimmel comes to Canberra next week, it will be as a patriot and purveyor of beer.

He’ll be at The Dock in Kingston to launch Travla, the new beer brand he co-founded with his mates Andy Allen and Jeremy Hunt.

“I’d been approached by a few beer and liquor companies to rep them, and I just thought, ‘I’d rather create something on my own back home’. Home is something I’m passionate about,” he says.

“My favourite drink is a mid-strength beer, but when we looked into it, we were surprised at how many beers we thought were Australian were not actually Australian-owned anymore.

“I’m a very proud Australian. I love this country, the diversity of its people and the landscapes. So one thing was sure, I wanted it to be an Aussie beer through and through.”

This is the spirit of Travla, which Travis says is not anchored to a specific suburb, state or place in Australia.

“Travla is designed to be an easy-drinking beer that fits perfectly with our easy-going nature and lifestyle,” Travis says.

“We’ve got the best backyard in the world – Australia – and I want to encourage people to get out there and enjoy it!

“It feels like these days we’re all in our designated states, each with its own identity. I think that was especially evident during COVID when our borders became our boundaries,” he says.

“I want people to be proud of being Australian again. Not being siloed into states, and not trying to be like any other country.

“That’s what Travla is all about.”

The first beer produced by Travla is aptly named ‘Australia’s Lager’.

At 89 calories and 3.5 per cent alcohol, Travis says this mid-strength ultra-low-carb lager is a “very easy drinking, social beer”.

“It’s the kind of beer you can enjoy while you hang out all day, have a barbecue, watch the cricket or footy or spend time with family and friends and it doesn’t bloat you or knock you off your feet,” he says.

He’s looking forward to officially launching it in Canberra and says there’s no more fitting place to launch than in the nation’s capital.

“One reason is that there are a lot of service people in Canberra, military people,” he says.

“There are no people who love this country more than those who’ve served.

“Canberra is also a very beautiful area, and The Dock is a great spot to have lunch and a beer and hang out with your people.”

Travis will be at The Dock from 2 pm on launch day (Saturday, 4 March), mingling and enjoying a few beers with patrons.

Travla Australia’s Lager (ultra low-carb mid-strength) and Travla Pale Ale will both be on tap and in cans.

Live music will come courtesy of talented locals Tori Chard from 2 pm to 5 pm, and Will Campbell from 7:30 pm.

The kitchen will be open all day to feed the crowds, and at 5:30 pm the Raiders game will be screened.

“It’s an away game so we’re expecting the die-hard Raiders fans to come to the pub for it,” The Dock co-owner Glen Collins says.

“During that, we want to get Travis to kick off the Viking clap for the start of the season – that would tie in well.”

Travis says all are welcome to join the fun at the launch.

“Come on down, mingle, drink and have a good time.”

Travla beer launches at The Dock, 7/81 Giles St, Kingston, on Saturday, 4 March, from 2 pm til late. This event is non-ticketed and walk-ins are welcome.

I watch TV but I’ve never heard of this chap. What show is he a star on?

Did you not get past the heading, Capital Retro?
In the first sentence of the article “You might know him as Ragnar Lothbrok from Vikings …”.
He was indeed a star, being the main character for the first 4 seasons of the show, which debuted on the History Channel and became one of the network’s biggest successes.

History Channel? What is that? I thought anything to do with history had been cancelled. I mean, weren’t the Vikings slave traders?
