Two employees, one tax file number? hmmm...

The ABC has the tale of one David Tucker who used his address and TFN to create a second staff member at his employer the Fyshwick business relocation company Atlantis.

The $58,000 in wages and super covered an extravagant amphetamine habit until a new manager wondered why he never met the second employee.

David’s gone down for 18 months, but is eligible for release in February.

Is he also being rehabilitated for drug related offences?

Speed is much more addictive than many people realize, its withdrawal isn’t just feeling bad, it’s feeling weak, ineffectual, sad, tired, disconnected, dizzy, afraid and even hungry! It was just a matter of time before someone went to this kind of extreme to keep getting it.

Policy makers: If you’re not going to get it off the streets then legalise it. Preferably dexamphetamine which is incredibly low toxicity (compared to the effective dose), affects the mind more than the body and has a long history of safe long-term medical use.

If it can be put on the PBS for children who won’t focus in boring classes then it can be made available to addicts who are only going to get into trouble otherwise.

So this guy gets 18 months for what is essentially stealing a little bit of money. Meanwhile rapists and (non*)murderers are getting about the same, sometimes less. I’m in no way condoning the theft of monies but lets try and get some ‘justice’ back into the justice system please.

Completely agree here. Violent offences should be punished far harsher.

$58k for two years is pretty poor really. He should have joined a union for non-existent workers (like the MUA or the CPSU).

Ahem. The CPSU is a non-existent union for extant workers.

because the tax remitted would be coming in under two different names with the same TFN?

Well, you got me there.

I would have thought that he would have just not provided a TFN for the fake employee. Sure, you pay the highest tax rate, but it isn’t like it was his money?

How on earth was this not picked up by the ATO????

Why would they be suspicious? They’d just assume he was being paid well.

The company on the other hand should have done the occasional check of the their database for duplication of things like TFNs and account numbers, as it is something that can happen pretty easy by accident, but also would have turned them onto this little scam.

The really trick would have been for him to set that false employee up, then quit himself….

did the new manager also not wonder earlier at the coincidence of two employees with the same name and not remark?

My understanding is different names were used?

Maybe, after all that speed, David was doing the work of two?

Back in the mid 90s every german backpacker in Australia was working with the same TFN.

* I say non-murderers because everyone knows that no-one gets murdered in the ACT, just a lot of accidental stabbings and beatings resulting in death
