Education Minister Chris Bourke has announced two new schools will kick off construction this year:

The $64.4 million Bonner Primary School andthe $44.1 million Franklin Early Childhood School are set to open at the commencement of the 2013 school year, catering for enrolment growth in the east and north Gungahlin areas.

Bonner Primary School is scheduled to open at the start of term 1 in 2013, providing pre-school and primary school facilities for families in the north Gungahlin region, especially in the growing suburbs of Bonner and Forde. When completed, it will accommodate up to 560 students.

As part of our commitment to the environment, the new school has been designed to achieve a 5 Green Star design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. It will also integrate horticulture, science and environment teaching areas. There will be a significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander influence in the school landscapes and artwork, as befits a suburb named after the pioneering Senator Neville Bonner.

Franklin Early Childhood School will provide facilities for children from birth to eight years of age. The learning spaces and facilities have been designed to support national childcare standards and the latest educational practices in purpose-designed early childhood facilities. The school will accommodate a 120-space childcare centre, and will be able to enrol up to 300 students from
pre-school to year 2.

Imagine how many J-dens, Jaidens, Jay-dens will be going through those schools. The Gungahlin area is an absolute mecca for the modern day bogan.

Has anyone had a look in Crace? Holy bogan!

At half a million dollars plus for a three bedroom townhouse their wont be too many bogans in Franklin.

I thought we put this to bed ages ago, Canberra’s finest real estate is overwhelmingly located in Gungahlin and the inner south.

The rest of Canberra is some of the countries most insipid three bedroom housing with almost no redeeming features.

Money has got absolutely nothing to do with being a bogan… e.g. Shane Warne, Eddie McGuire, Karl Stefanovic… bogans!

For more information on bogans or for a generalisation of a lot of the people living in suberbs like Crace, Casey, Ford etc… please visit http://thingsboganslike.com/

Yeh i’ve seen that site, it catches pretty much everyone at some point, to me bogan is the white trackies wearing, bourbon sipping dole bludger with a variation of the mullet and the new age bogan is the tight tee shirt wearing aggreive nob head you find in civic on friday night.

Warnie i’ll give you but how are Karl Stefanovic (who I actually find pretty funny, love to get on the drink with him one day) and eddie macguire bogans.

You’re right Mr/Ms Boxer. Karl is not a bogan. He is just your regular, run-o-the-mill dick.

Al, you are not correct – sure, Inner South, Woden and Weston Creek got provided for nicely by the feds, but most of Tuggeranong did not.

Tuggers schools were built on the cheap and the whole area still looks pretty underdone – it did not benefit from the landscaping, bus services etc Gunners is getting, and still doesn’t have them (compared to other areas of the ACT).

Also, it is quite galling that there are TWO universities north of the lake and a lot of elite sports facilities, while Tuggers residents constantly have to commute to those places. But wow, we are getting a new cemetery, and ‘they’ wanted to plonk a polluting power station in Tuggers! Tuggers have got a raw deal for a long time – things should have caught up by now, but they have not.

I think Gungahlin is very lucky to have you, Al, in the government’s ear, as it seems to me you are the only reason some services have been delivered in your area.

My sons both went to a “new” school in Tuggers that consisted of demountables as much as class rooms. I asked a teacher at the time why in a brand new school we already had demountables. She claimed it was the Government planning ahead to when the population had aged and we wouldnt need such a big school. Something in the order of 30-40 years away… True or not I dont know.

Eddie MacGuire doesnt have enough class to be a bogan.

Conspicuous, debt-financed consumption is the hallmark – nay, the raison detre – of the modern bogan.

I’m jealous that Gungahlin might finally get decent internet.

It already has it – TransACT FTTH is available in Forde, Franklin (stage 2 and 3) and all the new suburbs. It’s not cheap, though.

He said decent internet, not an over-priced piss-poor service that might occasionally get your desired site to load without timing out.

The point, Solar, is that communities should not have to fight tooth and nail, as Al has had to, to get normal services.

So if these new schools aren’t built, where exactly are all these kids going to go to school? Name the existing schools that have the capacity for all of the many new families moving in to the area.

Yes, Gungahlin is lucky to have Al. And he is a regular guy like the rest of us. I’m sure if someone else got off their backside instead of sitting at a keyboard whinging, they could do the same thing.

Al, you are not correct – sure, Inner South, Woden and Weston Creek got provided for nicely by the feds, but most of Tuggeranong did not.

Actually if one were to look at the actual numbers of young people leaving school in 2011, I would suggest that there are several thousand in South of Canberra, an undeniably sizeable number, even to mathematicans and demographers, as our colleges have been overflowing for last few years…evidently the babies of nappy valley surprisingly grew older..
So, spending many millions on 2 Nthn primary schools may be nice for those locals, but at the risk of being pedantic I will repeat where are the technical colleges, universities or even jobs in Southern Canberra, for the thousands of ACT young ? Obviously there isnt enough money to stretch South of Lake but why at least are there not even direct public transport ie easily accessible buses to educational institutions as exists in all other states.. Guess Canberra must be an especially lucky place, considering those in ACT Government obviously dont believe there is a real looming skill shortage as they dont seem to be actively ensuring any real educational and job opportunities for our ACT young as a priority.. Suppose its reality that it will be another bunch of politicians that will have to face hard economic reality, this lot will have retired, comfortably with their payouts, travel allowance, great super etc, but what about their children’s future ??? I know all of mine will be happy and successful faraway from ACT, as they and their many friends find Canberra very limiting for real growth…but we are pragmatists…

Actually, southside has been going backwards in the school departments as a result of all the school closures Andrew Barr oversaw, but it’s all to do with changing demographics rather a northside – southside bias. Spending isn’t prioritised according to where land sale revenue is coming from either – that’s not how democratic governments generally work – though at times it seems like Gungahlin Al would like things to roll that way (or at least his arguments go along those lines anytime anyone challenges spending on Gungahlin, whereas the actual argument should be about population growth and infrastructure needs etc, not the tired old line about Gungahlin land sales bankrolling the govt coffers, which may or may not be accurate but is beside the point).

“Franklin Early Childhood School will provide facilities for children from birth to eight years of age. And the staff for this centre are coming from where exactly…. perhaps you could build a school on UC also, practice for their teaching students?

Tell me please, Am I the only person that wonders??? How many dollars are sucked up by North of the lake? Plenty of fine younguns with lots of energeticf promise in the southern realm, so, where is our tech??????

And where do you think the land sale revenues are coming from to prop up the ACT budget?? And how dare we want schools and libraries? Demountables already in the ACT’s newest school but that’s fine by you?

The south side got all their facilities built up front when ACT budgets were just the dregs in the corners of Federal Government department budgets. Now we struggle to get facilities done before the need is desperate. But still you begrudge us that? Short memories..

Rest assured Simplex – the honey pot is still WAY in front from the Gungahlin land sales income.

Is there a reason why Bonner is getting a primary school and not a economy sized super-school like West Belco got stuck with?

The schools in Tuggeranong and South Canberra were built as the suburbs developed and people started living there.

Exactly the same way that these schools are now being built in the ‘new’ suburbs on the North side.

So yes, you are the only one that wonders. (????)

Sheesh, does Chris Bourke’s office ever generate a press release which doesn’t play the race card?

This morning there were several utes + blokes around the Franklin early childhood school site. Is work starting on it already?
