U-Turn Wanniassa style

RBW has sent in this video taken of a novel approach to a U-turn on the Wheeler Crescent and Forlonge roundabout after this morning’s hit and run on a cyclist down the road at Wheeler Crescent and Fincham Crescent.

He had this to say about intersections in the area:

(Edit)
I lived in the house on that roundabout for five years until I sold it earlier this year.

I’ve been telling people and the police for years that roundabout was an accident waiting to happen. One major reasons I moved is that roundabout is used as burnout circle and also a chicane for extremely fast street racing. Not saying this happened in this instance, but it was a matter of time in my mind.

I filmed and recorded and assisted police with two convictions of rev-heads doing burn outs on that roundabout. One I recorded showed the guy lose control and swing out in the path of another car. The police were extremely thankful I caught it on film as it made their conviction so much easier.

However, nothing is actually done about the road there. I got sick of the endless burnouts at 2-3am so I just moved. I urge the Government to rip out that roundabout, or at the very least put some traffic calming measures into that road. Wheeler crescent is a race track for hoons. has been for the five years I was living there, and I’m sure it will continue to be

RBW thank you for filming this & assisting police. I live near this and hoon behaviour is a nightly occurrence. Unfortunately nothing will be done by the govt until several deaths occur i.e. the forlonge/taverner sts intersection.

RBW sounds like a whinger, wow a car did a burnout, whoop-de-do.

sorry mate, this occured on a near on daily basis at 2-3am. right next to my bedroom window. for weeks and months on end.
I let it go initially for a long time. its quite difficult to rush out of bed, put clothes on rush outside and get decent footage and the number plate for something that often only happened in brief 1-3 minute periods of time. eventually I just had to stake out one night to put a stop to it.

once you are awaken from deep sleep every night for days and weeks on end maybe you’ll know how I felt. If I am whinger so be it. A valid whinge in this case

she then proceeds to do a U-turn across an unbroken line, about 10 -15 metres in front of a small roundabout which is quite busy at 7.30 in the morning. She ALWAYS ends up cutting off someone coming in either direction.

The ridiculous thing is, is that if she drives 200 metres on in the correct direction she would be able to turn her car around using the Ashley/Johnson Drive roundabout.

For want of not adding about 2 minutes to her trip she is willing to risk her life, those of other motorists and her son and other persons at the bus stop.

Video or it doesn’t happen.

If some wanker was doing a burnout outside my place at 2am, I’d have a whinge too.

And of course, it’s a Commodore.

At the risk of flogging a particularly dead horse, it’s also good to see evidence that 10+ years of speed cameras (instead of police partol cars) have really succeeded in “changing the attitudes of Canberra’s motorists”. Well done Govco. /sarcasm off

I’m curious about the legalities of how your video actually helped secure a conviction? Please don’t think I’m doubting your story, I’d just like to know how things actually worked.

In the video posted above, I can’t see anything that could positively identify the driver, or the car. The number plates aren’t visible in the dark, the driver’s not identifiable, even the car itself isn’t that distinguishable. I’m assuming that you were able to see the number plates and record them with your own eyes though.

So was it a case of ‘this driver’s well known to police, the plates match the car we think is in the video, and you’re a more trustworthy witness than the driver’? If the driver had a decent lawyer, would they have been able to establish enough doubt to avoid a conviction based on this video? Or was your original footage a lot clearer than what’s been posted online?

I gave a description of the driver (in this case it was easy bald man with goatee in 30’s), I jotted down the number plate (hence why the video jumped up for a second). The policeman who got back to me said they knew the driver who had previous record with several similar indescretions. The description from me, number plate and video evidence of the make and model of the car were no doubt sufficient to move forward.

In fact in this instance, this is probably more than the police can really expect to get from a member of the public. If what I did was not enough to take this guy off the road, then its free reign for these germs. lock up your daughters!

given the amount that get away with it, I think in my circumstance, this was a rarity and the police have a very difficult job. thankfully over time the patrols seemed to increase in wanniassa and you’d hear the sirens go off every now as well, but I doubt the tuggeranong police were able to spend a lot of time on stake outs.

ultimately I feel the road needs to be fixed to make it a safer neighbourhood. I dont have kids, but if and when I do, I would not have wanted to bring them up right next to this roundabout. moving was the only choice for me.

And he got done doing a s*** burnout. At least do it properly 🙂

The way it would have worked is this. He took the video, saw the rego, called Police and gave them the details.

Cops attend, take a witness statement from him (including his recollection of the rego, type and colour of car, appearance of driver, time date place etc etc) and then would have done checks. Rego would have matched vehicle, giving us the registered owner. Section 60 demand on registered owner to say who was driving at the time of the offence (probably himself) and then car seized, off to court we go.

They would likely have taken photographs of the tyre marks as well, as they would have matched the tread style and width of numpties tyres. All in all, dumbo goes to court and hopefully feels the overwhelming wrath of our judiciary.

I sold my house in Wanniassa for the same reason, except that it was the Sainsbury-Longmore roundabout where these germs did their business. I’m suprised I managed to sell it at all given that there the amount of skid marks up and down the street.

Great video catch! I’m guessing his car was seized straight up under anti-hoon legislation. Did you have to give evidence in court or was he at least smart enough to plead guilty?

I hope this clown was also booked for a defective right brake light on top of dangerous driving charges.

This video also shows the other driver just motor through the roundabout with gay abandon which is typical of these larger roundabouts. All it would have taken was for the burn out guy to lose control for a second and it was a major accident

Judging by that try hard stupidity, we’ll need a scanning electron microscope to find this guy’s…

The coppers nabbed this guy the next day as I gave them the video and his number plate.

This was from over a year ago. Its just one example of the endless rev-headery of Wanniassa. You put one away and another comes out of the woodwork.

Not ust rev-heads do things that can cause accidents. Where I get the bus from Johnson Drive in Calwell a couple of times a week, there is a mother who drops her son off in the bus stop area, That’s kind of ok I suppose, except that she then proceeds to do a U-turn across an unbroken line, about 10 -15 metres in front of a small roundabout which is quite busy at 7.30 in the morning.
