UC? CCAE? OC?

The Canberra Times reports on plans by the University of Canberra to pick up and extra 6,000 students (one wonders where they will sleep) and become and “Omniversity”.

An extra 6000 students and another $100 million in annual turnover at the University of Canberra will be part of an ambitious overhaul to turn it into an all-encompassing ”omniversity”.
The plan to turn the University of Canberra into a world-class institution educating people from the cradle to old age was outlined yesterday…

”Beyond 2018 it should be in the top half of Australian universities.”

The plan’s biggest proposal is to develop a polytechnic institute similar to the successful California Polytechnic State University and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The polytechnic would cater for people who do not get into university directly, according to Professor Parker. It would educate people in the hands-on skills needed in emerging industries across the world.

Sounds eerily reminiscent of the old CCAE no?

I’ll wonder whether they’ll start basing course marks on individual assessments, rather than a high proportion of group work designed to prop up international students (not their fault, but that of CU’s attempt get money out of naive people while devaluing everyone else’s quals).

It’s not just international students.

I did a grad dip. at UC years ago and was placed in a group that included both post-grads and under-grads for a semester long project. The team worked well and tried the best we could, but we had one bloke, and I swear this is true – his only contribution to the project was greenhouse gas emissions. We ended up with an HD, and we argued like hell that this guy shouldn’t benefit from that mark because he’d done sweet fcuk all … the faculty basically told us to drop it because doing anything about it would mean suspending the whole teams mark until it was sorted out and we wouldn’t graduate until that happened. In the end we gave up, but I’ll never forget that bludging little prick and I’ll go out of my way to fcuk up his chances if I get the chance.

Take comfort – anyone who has been through CCAE at grad level knows that an HD from CCAE isn’t worth anything in any case – HDs are handed out for work that wouldn’t get a credit at undergraduate level at ANU. So you weren’t actually being forced to share any glory whatsoever …

Currently UC campus accommodation is very expensive for students and is hard to get, they advise international students not to bring spouse or family with them straight away as they have such trouble accommodating families. Parking, much to the delight of parking inspectors is often bursting at the seams, another 6000 students? Scary.

as long as they don’t change the name of the Canberra University Netball Team.

WIN news just did a story on this and chose to film an area of the uni which looked like a quadrangle area.

Right in the middle of the screen written on the brickwork in thick black texta was the note “I LOVE PUSSY”

Good publicity for the uni? Do the reporters actually have a look around at what is being filmed?

+1.

Also, this will contribute to housing demand…

I’m reliably told that a bunch of international students are currently demanding a refund for a semester’s fees because of appalling performance by their lecturer – nepotised in without relevant qualifications, according to my informant. It will be interesting to see whether they manage to hush it up.

“World class” does not mean conferring a piece of paper on some poor sucker who will go back to Indonesia labouring under the impression it’s a meaningful qualification beyond what they paid for it.

So will it be called Canberra Polytechnic University (CPU- one for the tech heads out there) or the Polytechnic University of Canberra (PUC)?
