uc fails students who suck

ABC On-line is reporting a bizarre incident here where a group of full fee paying students were offered the chance to re-sit and examination thay had failed, and subsequently failed the subject, after being allowed to do so by an internal review committee, deapite the protests of the lecturer who delivered the subject and the examiniation.

This decision was later overturned (see link above), and surprisingly they have to re-do the subject the next time it is available. There has been all sorts of hoo-haa over this issue I am told, particulary considering that they were full-fee paying and of international origin arising calls of special treatment.

Now, at uni it took me six attempts to pass first year accounting (the sixth time i got a terminating pass) and I had to do the subject over and over until I got an acceptable mark. That aside, I hope these folks can pass their Law subject a wee bit quicker than what it took me to do accunting, and I also applaude the lecturer in question for sticking by their guns and refusing to roll over to the powers that be at UC.

Mind you, I never that flash at maths to begin with, so buggered if I know why I gave accounting a shot anyway… I still can’t add up a golf score card!

Evictor: I meant making them learn and to understand us crazy round-eyes so they can skin us across the negotiating table in years to come.

That’s what the parents think they’re paying for.

In this age of laser printers you can already give yourself any degree you like.

i preferred the header of JB loves men

And with the money they’re paying I think the uni should think deeply on the service it is offering.

How’s that – by lecturing and providing textbooks in Urdu or Hindi? If they are after a degree from an Australian University a pretty basic prerequisite is the ability to at least read and write the english language.

Why doesn’t UC just cut out the middleman: sell the international students their degrees for $80 grand and be done with it!
Bugger this quality education shite, just grab the money and run.

Because the parents actually think they’re paying for a quality education.

Also the parents of the little darlings want their kids out and mixing with an english speaking western society, not hanging out in ghetto groups.

Mind you Australians abroad are notable for their clannishness and forming “kangaroo valleys” so we shouldn’t throw too many stones.

I was on the board back in 96-99. Back when they started the whole reformation ergo boot-off-all-the-student-meddlers push. How that came about, well, it’s a touchy legal matter to divulge all the goods. Quite a tasty controversy.

Won’t take much to budge me though 😉

Randomgit – so you were on the Union board, what were you’re thoughts on the El Presidente for Life David Marsden-Bellard?

Knowing the lecturer in question it is fair to say that she has gone through a lot of grief with this. Despite all assurances in the report, the Uni just wanted to pass these full fee payers and for the whole thing to die away. Luckily she stood up for what is right.

Oh the money hungry wolves of UC. My my the tales of misplaced Union funds I could relate from my time on the Union board. But then, the constituents can eat the hollow fruit of their apathetic harvest as far as I’m concerned.
