In a press release sent out today the University of Canberra has declared that they have a plan make themselves into a world ranked university.

They don’t however reveal what the plan is, or really how they intend to go about… well anything.

The plan outlines a commitment to deeper internationalisation and improvements which will see the University of Canberra break into world rankings in research and teaching performance.

“Under this plan, we will become one of Australia’s most innovative and successful young universities – a university of which everyone who has been associated with us since our foundation can be proud,” Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Parker said.

“At the University of Canberra we have worked hard to be in the strongest position in our history. We are posting an underlying operating surplus. We have more students than ever before. Our research performance is on the rise. Now is the time to work on a bold vision for the future.

“There is no doubt there are challenging times ahead for universities, the whole sector is more vulnerable to market forces than ever before and has probably already had the highest level of funding we are likely to see. This is why a clear plan is important.

Is anyone else picturing a whiteboard in a UC office with the following plan written on it:
Step One: Make a plan!
Step Two: ??????
Step Three: Profit!

For those who would like a refresher.

I really wish the Canberra Times would just do its job as journalists to scrutinize what Parker says. Back to c_c: The University of Wyoming leads U.S. research universities measured by funding of $17,000 US annually per student. The information is out there for U.S. Universities, not so for Australian ones. There are 13,500 students at UW. Do the math. $230 million a year. That’s a lot of money even if the school was founded in the 19th century, Plus UW has a $300 million + Foundation. The numbers quoted for UC (where I work contributing to those great numbers Parker likes to quote) is $50 K AUS per researcher. How many researchers are there at UC? This is a good question: as low as possible via cherry picking. Where are you Canberra Times? Or Johnboy? And those dollars buy a lot more research in the U.S., where a postdoctoral researcher makes $40-45 K/year. At UC, it’s $86K. And the UC Foundation, don’t make me laugh! Care to retract c_c?

c-c: The University of Canberra will NEVER obtain the world university status of the University of Wyoming, which is a strongly funded school from a state with large gas and oil revenue. Unfortunately, despite what Professor Parker knows but doesn’t want to talk about, UC has actually dropped in national research ranking for university research in science (ERA 2012).

It sounds like a tall order, but think about it, they need only do a little bit better than University of Wyoming and they’re in! Climbing to the lofty heights of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences may take a little longer.

it’s all over their website: http://www.canberra.edu.au/breakthrough
all seems pretty sensible.
