UC to splurge - ANU too.

The Canberra Times has details of the University of Canberra’s big plans for a $100 million building spree.

They include $55.5 million for a new Knowledge Commons for staff and students, $31.9 million for the Peter Cullen Centre for Environmental Solutions and $9.4 million for a National Applied Science Training Institute in collaboration with the Australian National University College.

But what the hell is a “knowledge commons” I hear you cry?

It sounds like an expansion of the library.

UPDATED: The CT also has a story on the ANU’s $250 million dollar plans (giving a handy benchmark on the comparative sizes of the organisations):

With the $50 million second stage of the John Curtin School of Medical Research completed last month, funding is now being sought for the final works. ”We have around $180million worth of building presently planned, and we have the cash for $120 million of that, so we’re going back to the Federal Government for the additional [funds],” Professor Chubb said.

The next most expensive project on campus will be the $150 million science precinct revamp, with stage one due for completion in June 2011. The two new three-storey buildings will create new centres for the teaching and research of biology and chemistry.

The sooner UC becomes ANU’s Belconnen campus the better for tertiary education in Canberra.

Never gonna happen. For a start, the ANU doesn’t want to take up all the debts that UC is carrying (which are substantial). Then there’s the inevitable hassle and poor PR that would occur with a complete restructure and lots of staff being laid off (due to administrative duplication).

@ housebound:

I’m not sure of the issue you are referring to, but often these projects are done via infrastructure grants from the federal government, in which case it may be a take it or loose it proposition.

Personally I feel that the UC brand will never successfully compete with the ANU like the universities in Sydney/Melbourne achieve, and that it should merge / be taken over by the ANU which is desperately running out of space on the Acton campus. The two have different niche disciplines which would probably mesh quite nicely, and would certainly help in attracting international students.

The sooner UC becomes ANU’s Belconnen campus the better for tertiary education in Canberra.

What’s wrong with a Uni trying to grow?

Soooo, they send the private details of staff and students to India for safekeeping. They say this is to save money – noting that it wasn’t be the Uni that suffers from any Indian fraud – but then want to splurge?

National Applied Science Training Institute… or NASTI for short.

I’d love to see nous commons come into vogue.
