Andrew Barr has, in a lengthy speech, announced his plans to explore the merger of UC and CIT.

In the next two months he wants to achieve the following:

    — Explore and report to Government on the opportunities for formal collaboration between UC and CIT, including amalgamation.
    — Assess these opportunities against the vision, goals and principles contained in the Federal Government’s review of higher education;
    — Assess how the VET sector can be strengthened to meet the needs of the ACT, including strengthening VET in schools; and
    — Recommend to the Government the preferred arrangements/model to achieve these objectives.

For those wondering VET stands for Vocational Education and Training.

What about the Canberra University of New Technology…..That was also one of the options when the name change was done 20 years ago.

Couldn’t call it that, it would clash with the Canberra Uni Netball Team.

Does anybody ever wonder what percentage of any governments yearly workload is devoted to either merging or splitting some business, department or whatever?

If improvements were made each time, then they all should run f%&king brilliantly by now.

What about the Canberra University of New Technology…..That was also one of the options when the name change was done 20 years ago.

Bring it on. We can then rank with Darwin. Where Northern Territory University has a baking department.

“Charles Darwin”

Well UC was originally a college until 1991 (CCAE). I was there when the debate about amalgamations and name changes was happening. It was the standard joke going around campus that the place would be renamed Southern Highlands Institute of Technology (SHIT). Teeheehee.

When what’s UC started [mid-70s] it was called ‘Bruce College of Technical and Further Education and known to one and all as Bruce TAFE [It was the only thing in Bruce at the time].

The ‘SHIT’ name option was one of the ‘suggestions’ put up when it became CCAE [early 80s I think].

Bring it on. We can then rank with Darwin. Where Northern Territory University has a baking department.

What Canberra needs is another TAFE institute and have some healthy competition. All schools are businesses at the end of the day.

Nothing like a University of Canberra Panel Beaters Degree or a Bachelor of Applied Hairdressing

or a PhD in either.

So, consolidate two already inefficient bureaucracies into one monolithic institution to serve the needs of 32,000+ undergraduate students, single-handedly creating the largest\second largest undergrad institution in Australia?
How could it go wrong?

Sounds like CIT education at UC prices.
