If you’ve been living with your head in the sand you’re probably unaware that the UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championship will be held at Stromlo Forest Park from 1 – 6 September. Featuring some of the the world’s best mountain bikers there will be breath taking speed, hardcore endurance, finish line battles and nerve wrecking balancing acts as this year’s world champions are to be crowned in Australia’s biggest mountain bike of the year.

Crowds of over 40,000 are expecting from all over the country and tickets are selling fast .

It’s not all about the bikes with DJ Kid Kenobi and Resin Dogs lighting up the event village throughout the weekend which is particlarly cool as kids under 10 they’re free when accompanied by a paying adult, so it could be a great day out for a family.

More details of the event are available at the mtb website at https://www.mtbworldscanberra.com.au/home/

In a a bit of a coup, RiotACT have also managed to get our hands on two double passes valued at $50 to the finals of the event on Friday 4th – Sunday 6th which we’ll be giving away to premium members. Existing members need only contact us to register their interest in the tickets & all new members between now and thursday 3rd at 5pm will get a double chance to win.

Winners will be notified by email on the evening of thursday 3 September.

Was mentioned on Good news week about the MTB world champs here. He also described Canberra as a flat planned City. planned City yeah but obviously he has never ridden up the hills around here.

Wasn’t the hockey world cup run here recently?

Canberra hosted the Athletics world champs in the 80’s sometime.

At least the MTBs aren’t disruptive to traffic etc like the V8s were.

Maybe Ive been living under a rock, but before those big flashing signs appeared on the main roads, I had no idea this was coming. The signs I speak of, are the ones saying ‘MTB CHAMPIONSHIPS’ ‘DELAYS EXPECTED’. So, even though you think it wont affect much, apparently someone at TAMS thinks theres enough disruption to Canberras roads for the next week that its worth putting signs up.

Dry your eyes princess

Sorry, my bad I thought it was only World Cup rounds for Cairns.

Just one other World Champs in Canberra that I could find: ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships, held 19 November 2006.

Australia has never hosted the MTB World Championships

Yes it has. Cairns hosted a round of the World Cup in 94 and 95, then the World Champs in 96.

But we were wracking our brains at home the other day to work out whether Canberra has hosted a World Championships for other sport(s) and if so which ones and when??

Country relay tomorrow – yippee!!

Hey Felix the Cat…couldn’t have said it better myself. People…..chill out!!!!

Yes dvaey, I have seen the flashing signs and yes I imagine there will be more traffic than normal along the surrounding roads to SFP but it’s not like these are major thoroughfares and they aren’t going to be closed off. Do you get your panties in a bunch as well when Commonwealth Ave virtually turns into a carpark because of the increased traffic due to Floriade?

What is it with people, why can’t they be a bit more tolerant and embrace different ideas and events instead of being negative about them all the time?

Personally I don’t really care either way about the MTBs. I’m not really “into” them and probably won’t go to this event but I can appreciate people have different tastes than me and do like this sort of thing so I think good on them. I’m not a huge fan of Floriade either, been a couple of times in previous years and can take it or leave it, but can appreciate the time and effort put into putting on the event.

Every “event” such as the ones I just named or others like Summernats or even just a sale at a local shop/business is bound to bring more people into the area, that’s what the purpose of them is for. If that impacts directly on you because you happen to live nearby or it’s on your way to work/school then just deal with it. Leave home 10-15 mins early on your commute to work/school/wherever and this should allow plenty of time even allowing for extra traffic. Or try an alternative route, or even an alternative method of transport (if you can’t beat them, join them – ride a bike to work – can be quicker than driving a car in some cases!). No one is forcing you to attend the event, if you don’t like it then don’t go. It’s only on for a week. Get over it.

I’d imagine there will be delays at least on Uriarra Road, Cotter Road, and Coppins Xing Road, over Thurs, Fri, Sat & Sun. So if you take the back roads between Belconnen and Weston Creek to work on those days, I’d be taking the Parkway/William Hovell instead.

I can’t wait, this is going to be huge. Following from the insane feats of skill and endurance seen at the MTB World Cup round hosted in Canberra last year, this will be even bigger. It will be a once in a lifetime (yes, it sounds corny, but it’s true) event for Canberra – and maybe even Australia.

Australia has never hosted the MTB World Championships, and has only hosted rounds of the MTB World Cup twice (Canberra 2008, and Cairns 1996), so this is a huge honour.

Word has it that the event organisers have filled their requirement for 450 volunteers to help out with the event, and have now started a volunteer waiting list!

I’ll be out there as a volunteer marshalling for the week, so look for me trackside – I’ll be the one with the stupid grin, yelling for the riders to go faster!

Cranky – I reckon 4000 ticket sales for an event that doesn’t actually start for another 5 days or so is not too bad.

At least the MTBs aren’t disruptive to traffic etc like the V8s were. Maybe the govt could spend some more money on more ‘train wreck’ public artwork instead, would that please you more?

I’m sure all the interstate and foreign visitors will spend money in Canberra on accommodation, food and the like which is good for the local businesses and then go home and tell their friends who might also come for a future holiday to Canberra.

If you don’t like the event then don’t go. Stop being such a NIMBY.

Everyone will wait until 10 mins before racing starts on the saturday morning before deciding they will go. And then complain about the traffic, parking and queues.

Pardon my cynicism.

I believe they have sold 4000 tickets so far.

Seem to remember the V8 races had an on site audience of about 100K. At the lousiest time of the year.

But motorsport is anathema to Sonic and Co, so lets spend millions on the pushies.

Just like Northbourne Avenue on any weekday morning then?

The weather looks good, I they hope all have a great time!

If you are taking a car to this event watch out for the new parking restrictions near the entrance to Stromlo Forest Park and on Urriara Road between Cotter Rd and Coppins Crossing Rd.
