UFO/Balloon over Canberra?

So an hour ago (9pm Monday) I was taking out the garbage when I noticed a flying object – appeared to be burning – in the sky kind of hovering around. My initial thought was some sort of balloon with a latern suspended below it. I called out to some family members to come look and the object started to accelerate southwards (I’m in Palmerston). It floated across the sky then sped up. As it accelerated it appeared more like a rocket with an afterburner though it then slowed again and burned away until it flickered out of sight into the distance. A handy mobile was not sensitive enough to pick anything up. It was difficult to tell if it was really close or really far away. My guess it was some sort of science experiment.

Did anyone else see anything aside from us?

Hehe didn’t mean to take away the earlier article. To be honest I wouldn’t have posted a separate story had I spotted the Franklin article…I just missed it.

I guess it was Venus…it just seemed to streak across the sky.

Firestorm22, in Palmerston, are you just trying to outdo my day time UFO sighting over Franklin from the day before? (Which actually turned out to be Venus – and I had vowed to myself as a boy never to mistake Venus for a UFO – damn!!)

Sorry, just me jumping my 4 wheel drive over speed humps again. I really should slow down next time. I mean 55 km/h is a bit excessive eh.
