Tiny 50gram airframes zooming around inside a basketball stadium while it’s raining outside. Larger 3D aerobatic aircraft hovering up the walls and flying through the rafters. Electric helicopters with 100 parts all vibrating in loose formation together.

Well that’s what’ll be happening this saturday night in the Tuggers basketball stadium from 7:00-9:30pm. Run by the local hobby shop in Kambah called Nitrodude every 3rd Saturday of the month.

The weather is always perfect inside a gym and the smooth calm air makes for excellent flying conditions. Rotating flight sessions of 10 minutes allows separation of small planes, large planes and helicopters. Each having their own flight patterns with the separate flying times an attempt at reducing what is still a night of carnage and crashes.

Latest technology including 5 grams brushless motors with 4 gram receivers controlling 40 gram airframes. Running on the same lipo battery technology that powers your iphone these miniature marvels will fly up to 8 minutes on one charge.

New technology quad copters, a machine powered by 4 motors controlled by 3 axis gyros sensing the smallest movement. An airframe essentially modelled on the iphone drone but more capable.

Come and watch the action, and see how far the latest technology for indoor electric flying has come.

You never know you might get the bug.

Get the rc star destroyer in there and let them feel the power of the dark side.

For those with the $ and the inclination – http://www.aerobot.com.au/ looks like the place to start your quadrotor journey. Some amazing vids on that site , one wonders what sort of amazing images of Canberra could be created with some of these “airborne stable camera platforms”

Doh. I misread the title and thought it was micro acrobats.

Woo, other quadrotor people…
*has considerd builting a larger-scale DIY one for a while, but is pondering the best way to lift a .5kg camera payload for more than 15 mins*

But small-scale is also fun…
