Unearthed Review continues its inexorable progress through the Canberra musicians on the TripleJ Unearthed website.

Moving on through the “drummed” artists we come to Owen Campbell.

He has this to say about himself:

“possibly one of the best performers to come out of Australia for quite sometime…”

This is real old school blues.

It’s the sort of thing that, if you’re very lucky, you hear driving late at night on the AM dial as the ionosphere goes crazy and tiny little stations from the middle of nowhere come through the dial like spirits of the dead.

Quite how Canberra produced such an earthy sound is a btit of a mystery, but it is very special.

If you like Ash Grunwald you’ll love Owen Campbell.

Resurrecting a not-too-old review here, being a bit of a blues fan I gave Owen’s songs a whirl after reading JBs comments.
This guy is great! He has two albums out – “Mice on the Wheel” and “Sunshine Road” These tracks are from Sunshine Road which is definitely the better of the two albums. Better production, and a punchier, more mature edge on the songs (there are three songs he revisits on Sunshine Road from Mice on the Wheel, all of which I think are improvements).
You can get the CDs from his website, or from Black Market Music on the web for $28 plus postage, but, cheapskate that I am, I bought them both off iTunes for $17 each and burnt my own CDs.
Five stars for Sunshine Road and three stars for Mice on the Wheel from me! (and thanks for the lead, JB!)
