“But I’m sick!” I cry.

Johnboy brings the whip down harder than before.

“Fine, I’ll do another Unearthed Review.”

Today we meet USING THREE WORDS, a pop rock group out of Canberra.

Here’s what they have to say about themselves:

Using Three Words play a .”..smart sometimes technical take on punk, rock and the spaces in between…” – Drum Media May 2008

Using Three Words self-titled debut EP was recorded in March of 2006 with ARIA award winning producer/engineer Anton Hagop (silverchair, Cog, Powderfinger, Missy Higgins, The Dissociatives).

After this successful collaboration, Using Three Words again recruited Anton for the recording of their debut album in February 2008. The debut album is set for release in November 2008 along with a film clip for the lead single “Close To Fire“.

Since the release of their debut EP in 2006 Using Three Words have been receiving airplay on national Australian radio station Triple J. Using Three Words were named ‘Made In Canberra Band of the Month’ by Canberra radio station FM104.7 in June of 2006 to coincide with the release of their debut EP. The tracks “If it’s all the same” and “Forget” from the EP received high-rotation airplay throughout that month.

They actually said way more than that, but you can read that on their Unearthed page. Here’s what I have to say about them.

So having not really listened to Placebo since I finished high school I’ve long since lost track of my former favourite little alternative gothy-pop-rock band, so imagine my surprise when I discover that Placebo have moved to Canberra, discovered CAPS LOCK and changed their name to USING THREE WORDS.

It seems singer Brian Molko finally hit puberty and stopped wearing black. Good for him.

USING THREE WORDS do sound a lot like Placebo. They only sound a little bit less like Placebo than Placebo do, which is a good thing because Placebo are often a bit too Placebo for my tastes. Follow me? Probably not. That’s fine.

So obviously if you dig/dug/digdug Placebo you should give these three tracks a listen. They’re not bad, if you dig that kind of thing. I do.

Three stars.

My understanding is that this band broke up a few years ago, but many of Using Three Words are now the Canberra band The London Circuit (remember that sock puppet video for their clip Walk?)
