Oh Penny

So when I came up with Unearthed Reviews 2.0 and decided to randomly select from a list of bands with interesting names, I was positive I’d be getting a lot of really terrible bands and that would be funny.

Despite my best efforts however, I keep finding bands that are actually kinda fun. I’m still finding terrible music as well, so I guess all is well?

Today I got the number 13. 13 means Joe Kickass & The Aspirational Liberal Voters who pretend to like Rugby Union.

That’s their name, and this is what they have to say about themselves:

Joe Kickass & The Aspirational Liberal Voters who pretend to like Rugby Union came together over a mutual love of 90’s Labor policy & stoner metal. We are a pair of chronic alcoholics with a fervent love of mind altering substances such as L.S.D. We will make Howard, Costello et al pay. If we can be bothered.

Here’s what I have to say about them:

They need to put up more songs. Planet O’ Penny is one song and I want to hear more.

What do I think of this song? It’s kinda fun. It’s weird, fun, uncomfortable, and kind of cute. I like its energy, I like how the vocals feel much more sombre than the music, and I like that it just ends. I like it. It does however feel like it might be that ‘one weird track’ on an album and I feel myself fueled by curiosity to hear more of Joe etc’s work.

Is it all this weird, and if it is, is it all this kind of weird? These are questions that need answers!

Three and a half stars.
