Unearthed Reviews: Stateovmind. Two stars

Johnboy quakes with laughter when he orders me to write another Unearthed Review, and I’m powerless to do anything about it.

Ahh well. Next on my list is Stateovmind… wait what? Stateovmind? Yes. I read that correctly, ok fine. Moving on.

Here’s what Unearthed has to say about him:

He may be new to your ears but long-time Hip Hop music fan/contributer Stateovmind, has spent years locked away in his various Canberra bedrooms recording and honing his word craft. The 5-Track “Something for Nothing” EP is the introduction and embodiment of this process and is available for free both as a digital download and as a limited run CD.

The EP features production from across Australia including M-Phazes, Devize and Neversaidall. And also features appearances from the soulful Ally Cowell on “Journey” and fellow All Ords member Podbotiks on the gritty “Not Right.” “Something For Nothing” is a short and sharp introduction to Stateovmind with one aim, to share locally produced hip hop music.

Here’s what I have to say about him:

What the hell was he thinking with that name? Stateovmind. It looks ugly, it sounds ugly to say, it feels ugly to type. Stateovmind. Ugh. I think it’s supposed to sound tough and thoughtful at the same time, maybe? I don’t know. It doesn’t. I don’t get it. It’s not the point, move on Barcham.

Fine.

So StateOFmind is a hip hop artist who should probably buy his backup singer a gift. Her contributions are pretty much the only thing of note in either of the two tracks up on Unearthed. I can’t help but think this is music for people who don’t care at all about what they listen to. I’m not entirely sure there were two tracks up there, it may have been the same one uploaded twice with a name change.

Was that too mean? Staffubblind does little to make himself seem worthwhile. I know someone will tell me I don’t ‘understand’ hip hop enough to ‘get’ what Stotbglubglubmend is doing, and that person will most likely be correct. But that won’t change the fact that his name is stupid and I can’t get past that. Sorry, I know I’m a bad person.

Two stars.

Can you review my mate’s band? They’re called Mandala but you have to search using
M A N D A L A as there are two bands with the same name. They’re all Canberrans except for the singer though they’re trying to relocate to Sydney.

Agreed- you do not understand hip hop and so this post has absolutely no merit. Why would you even bother reviewing something if you have no understanding of it? Glad I could be the first to say it.
Also agreed- you are a bad person.
Thought for the day- before you start criticising names, maybe you should look at your own…

I’m glad you said it too, and I have no answer for you. This post does have no merit and my opinions on hip hop could and probably should be ignored. There are many favourable reviews of Slatedoggrind’s work on the Unearthed site, probably by people who get it. Go read those.

Alas I’m rather stuck with my name, seeing as it’s my actual name.

Also Stateovmind, thank you for putting the music up there in the first place.

At least you’ve admitted you’re unsuited to review a hip-hop artist straight up, but it does beg the question as to why you bothered to do it all. I’m giving it a listen now, he’s not bad, but it does sounds kinda samey. In the first track vocals remind me of The Herd without the cutting insights and the backing track reminds me of Hilltop Hoods in terms of sampling and stuff. But I’m guessing he’s still cutting his teeth a bit. The 2nd track “Journey” I like the sound of a lot though, a bit naff, but it sounds fun and more original than the other track up on UnEarthed.

Lookout Barcham! They’ll probably come and hippity-hop you back to this “Old school” I keep hearing about.
I understand that they can mobilise a group of henchmen together to get all ‘street’ on your western-most side! Spinning in circles is said to confuse them, but don’t lose your balance. ‘Tripping’ is reportedly disrespectful.

Do you know anyone that can operate a spray-can? Call them and ask for see if they can loan you their ‘cred’. I hear it helps…

Thanks for checking the music!
