Chief Minister Stanhope is imploring the masses to update their medicare addresses in February with a promise of a chance to win $10,000.

Mr Stanhope said the ACT relied on accurate Medicare data to get its fair share of Commonwealth funding.

“Few people realise that official population figures, and Commonwealth payments to states and territories, are largely based on Medicare data,” Mr Stanhope said. “Updating your address with Medicare will ensure our community receives its fair share of GST funding for services.

“For every year that an ACT resident is not counted, the ACT Government misses out on around $2,500 in GST funding.

“I encourage all new Canberrans to update their Medicare address during February for a chance to win $10,000 thanks to SERVICE ONE Members Banking,” Mr Stanhope said.

Apparently past campaigns like this have brought in $4.3 million to the Territory coffers.

OK then, point taken. Just seems to me a shame that it still takes incentives (such as $10k) are required to get folks to do something like this. I was thinking about parallels such as changing address on licence, rego, etc., but suppose they don’t have the same model federal -> state/territory funding arrangements?

Just wondering – how many hospital beds/ventilators/nurses/etc. does $10,000 buy?!
