Territory and Municipal Services are keen for you to come see what they’ve been doing at Gibraltar Falls:

The popular Gibraltar Falls recreation area has reopened to the public after an extensive upgrade to the walking trail and picnic facilities, Manager of Operations, National Parks and Catchments, Brett McNamara said today.

“Standing over 50 metres tall, Gibraltar Falls is one of the most majestic and popular recreation areas in the ACT,” Mr McNamara said.

“The upgrade to the walking trail within the Gibraltar Falls recreation area will ensure visitors are able to enjoy the beauty of the falls in a safe way. The upgrade includes the installation of a new galvanised steel stair case and hand rails along the trail to the lookout area.

“In addition, the upgrade has included two new picnic benches in a landscaped area to allow visitors to better enjoy the surrounds.”

Oh, that’s a bit sad actually – you must be able to view the glare from 20km away. Couldn’t they have done something to blend it in a bit more? I have been here so many times and enjoyed scrambling over the rocks. The steps don’t really make it any more accessible, just more sanitised.

If that’s what they are doing then that explains why the path from here to Woods Reserve has taken so long…(from the 2003 fires and the 2009 floods is what they have on their sign for their excuse). Can’t wait to see the kilometre of metal pathway they will use when they fix that.

I have to say I am a little torn. Making it accessible it great, but it ain’t nearly so natural, which makes me a little sad.

On the other hand, it sure is shiny.

It is so like um artificial. I did like the rocks and stumbling around the place. But I suppose that’s the price we pay for the litigious society we live in.

This is one of my favourite spots in the ACT. I’ve been there with the kids many times. Looks like I’ll have to head out there again soon.
