The London Circuit Soviet has not had to cast its gaze far to find something else to pre-announce from the budget.

Joy Burch has gone for a twofer and announced the Canberra Theatre Centre is getting upgrades to the seating in the Playhouse and the Courtyard studio.

“These upgrades will benefit theatre audiences through better seating, new captioning screens, and improvements in energy efficiency and temperature control for patron comfort,” Ms Burch said.

“The upgrade includes new seating for the Playhouse and Courtyard Studio, with an emphasis on comfort and space for audiences.”

A suite of improvements to the Centre’s amenities will be made to cater for the needs of touring production companies, so that Canberra can continue to attract world class productions.

Price is just a touch north of $3 mill.

Most important is the upgrade to the courtyard – the courtyard is the space used most often by local performers (because it’s not priced out of their range, unlike the other two stages), so it’s good that it’s been picked up for attention this time round.

The Playhouse? That hardly makes sense. It’s the Canberra Theatre on the other side that needs attention IMO.
