Vale Jim Murphy

johnboy 26 May 2011 30

The ABC reports that local business magnate and wine merchant Jim Murphy has passed away following liver surgery.

For a man who imbibed so freely of his product it was always likely to be liver, kidneys or heart.

I didn’t know Jim Murphy well, but I had met him a few times.

He ran good businesses built on looking after his customers and he employed a lot of people.

He gave generously to the arts and had the best private collection of indigenous art I’ve ever seen.

He was heavily involved in politics on the conservative side and gave prodigious sums of money to support his chosen causes.

Jim Murphy believed passionately in Canberra and in its economic development.

While many might disagree with how he sought to improve the city few can question his devotion or commitment to Canberra.

My greatest disappointment is none of his peculiar television ads appear to have survived on YouTube.

We’re poorer for his passing.

(If anyone has a picture of Jim we can use please send it in to images@the-riotact.com )

Met Jim a couple of times, and he was a bloke who enjoyed life and built a good business at the same time. He was a character in the same mould as the late Bill Hunter.

No doubt the cat’s bum mouthers will be saying he (and Bill) should have lived like an advertisement for the Temperance League. Of course, in that case they wouldn’t have been who they were.

Never mind the joy – feel the virtue!

Vale Jim.

Sorry but I have to say this.

On Jim’s headstone. ‘Here lies Jim Murphy – He enjoyed the goodtimes’.

He was a charactor and there’s not enough of them left in society. RIP Jim

couldn’t agree more .. given than he was as big as a truck and made his fortune off selling alcohol to the masses, then it really shouldn’t be any surprise that he succumb to something like liver / kidney / heart problems. I hear these problems tend to go hand in glove with drinking like a fish.

Um, that’s why JB said: ‘For a man who imbibed so freely of his product it was always likely to be liver, kidneys or heart.’…..

Although his stable of tories were more liberal (note the lowercase L) and were closer to the true Liberal values rather than the Christian Conservatism that has taken root in the current batch of ACT Libs.

Do you really think successful business people get ahead by rolling over on deals and being wimps? Of course he played hard. I still maintain he was a lovely man.

The vicious and mean-spirited tone of these cat’s bum mouth comments over someone’s death are only rivalled by their lack of logic. If he had been a teetotaller, you would be cursing him for for being a heartless purveyor of misery who was too smart to use his own products.

He lived the way he wanted to, was a productive and engaged member of the community, and was a character in an often grey and boring polity. I’m sure he never wasted a second wondering if he should have spent his time chewing mung beans and working out at the gym instead of lunching long, well and often.

I didn’t agree with most of his political views, but that hardly makes him a bad person who deserved to die. He would never have smirked over someone’s demise just because he didn’t agree with their politics or because they didn’t live the same way he did.

Gloating over his death is repulsive. I just hope that his friends and family do not see these comments.

apparently he’d been hitting the gym every morning for the last five years.

And although most of this so-called stable was in place as a poliitical party well before he came along with his money – and although Murphy’s money funded only the advertising costs of two candidates rather than the party itself. That leaves a stable of one independent candidate who probably could be described as rather Tory.
