Name doesn’t mean much to you? Then it’s a fair guess you don’t follow the soccer.

AsianCup.blogspot.com brings the news that Canberra’s own Carl Valeri departed his home town today to join the rest of the Socceroos in Singapore for the upcoming Asian Cup to be held from July 7-29 and will be hosted in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia this year.

Eamonn, the editor of the site, also has a football blog dedicated to Canberra, NEARPOST, in which Socceroo Carl Valeri and Matilda star Sally Shipard write a column each week.

Good luck to Carl. Another very talented ex Canberran, Kaz Patafta has just joined Australian champions the Melbourne Victory on loan for a year from Portugese giants Benfica. He joins another ex Canberran, Matt Kemp at the Victory.

Carl, a local product (his father recently stepped down as President or Capital Football and is a former top level striker himself), recently played his first match for the Socceroos against China – and played very well.

He is currently playing in Italy.

I hope he gets a run in the Asia Cup. I’ll be in Thailand cheering them on!

thanks for the blogspot link – and yep, aussies will win their first real silverware next month.

not that carl will play much of a lead role – but the squad rests on all its players and he is there ahead of a lot of other very talented players, so well done him!
