Vamp - some thoughts

Bonejack’s friends think he needs a lifestyle.

He thinks he might like being a goth.

So as a good friend I went with him to the Vamp night at the Holy Grail.

With the lights down the garish paint scheme didn’t overly offend.

In large part older goth men stood on the edges and young goth women in extravagant corsetry bopped away on the dance floor. Periodically large groups would disappear outside to shiver and smoke.

The guys running it went around every now and then asking what people wanted to hear. It seemed mostly people wanted to hear old NIN and Rammstein.

We played a lot of pool badly.

Bonejack thinks he might like to be a goth and plans to go back.

Wow…I know Riot-Act sinks to some lows, and I know I’m often party to that..but WOW. There are some real lame-arses on this site.

If you don’t like rounder chicks, make friends with them, because they always have hot friends.

The main reason why I was going to comment on this thread was to do with the attitudes of the older goths in regards to the newer breeds (not emos). Grow up. You’re 35. In high school, we worry about image (or alcohol). In adulthood, we worry about good music (or alcohol – or both). Good music has nothing to do with how the musicians or the fans dress, act, talk or anything else but the sound. There’s some great industrial out there, I might even dare to say some tidbits of black/death/doom/celtic/whatever metal I’ve heard are brilliant as well. Listen to the damn music, don’t worry about how other people listen to it or how they’re dressed. Get drunk and have a good time.

Also…don’t worry about that bunch of drunken bogans who were intentionally (?) dancing like idiots in the middle of the dance-floor at the last vamp or whatever it was with goths at the grail before this one post. We…I mean they were just trying to have fun. The snobbish looks and what seemed to be offense at our very un-blackened presence was laughable…even more than our drunk-dancing.

Gosh I would LOVE to go to this night if I had friends who were into this kind of music. Im not a “goth” anymore but it sounds like a great night out!

Your first statement was;

Queenie said :

I dunno, I want to gouge my eyes out looking at that photo too…

After a little backlash your conscience kicked in;

Queenie said :

Hm, wow, people took my comment a lot more seriously than I meant it. All I can think to say is I really didn’t mean it that way and I’m sorry to the people I made feel bad.

So how did you mean that comment? ‘I want to gouge my eyes out looking at that photo too’ is pretty self explanatory to me, not many other ways you can take that.

…And then you played the victim after people questioned your sincerity;

I offered a sincere, genuine apology because I realised I’d upset people, and if that isn’t good enough for you then so be it. To those who were actually involved, however, they should know I was sincere.

To the people making wild assumptions (because of a joke on the internet) about my lifestyle, choice of music, body shape, clothes et cetera, I’m not even going to bother setting you straight. You don’t deserve to know.

Queenie, I don’t want to know.

So people are making assumptions about you after you posted something on the internet?!?!

Wow people can be sooooooo cruel can’t they?

Woah, dude…. Way to take ME seriously! Although I was half-serious…

I’ve never heard anyone be called ‘fat’ in a positive way.

You’re cool JakeZ, or maybe I’m completely full of shit!

Nah you are atually cool! Ugh! I don’t know if I’m being serious now or not!

We can really misconstrue our words on the interweb can’t we…

HAHA, quiet you.

I do believe that Queenie was sincere, and I think it takes a generous and secure person to apologise.

In this medium it is sometimes easy to misunderstand what was intended without the cues that verbal and body language provide us.

As for goths and emos and whatnot, I just want to thank todays youth for listening to ridiculously lame wimp making music. Back in my day, old punks used to say that 90’s punk was crap. Nowadays we all just join forces to wail on you.

The commentator labelled them as ‘fat’ I’ve never really heard that said to someone’s face in a positive light mate.

Way to take me seriously.

Oh I have a goth story that relates to my political nerdery.

I worked for Senator Humphries during the last election campaign and we had a goth girl come in wanting to help out. Big girl with black black hair, white white face makeup with big lipstick and eye liner and the whole shebang. It was fantastic. She ended up manning one of the smaller booths for the entire day.

Some people in the Party had the automatic ‘what the’ reaction but I thought it was great and she put in a lot more effort than most people.

Personally I think the Liberal Party needs more characters like her and maybe one day I can go back to dying my hair green.

I get a bit sick of people in society who seem to want the world to be drab. You have to conform to this very narrow way of looking; and living your life. Personally I love it, and the girls in the photos look pretty happy to me. Good on them.

I think a better question would be why your missus always dresses the same if you really had to ask?

I really think that I never pay attention to what she wears when she is out, as it is a novelty with 3 littlies to be out (without them).

I prefer to wear ugg boots, flannie and jeans. i have to do this in the comfort of my own home, though. I wear a bag of fruit 5 days a week, no tie on fridays (casual day).

Because individuals don’t need to wear a uniform to define themselves culturally and are open-minded enough to appreciate art in many different forms, genres and cultures.

Because showing up to Cashews dressed for goth might be a little bit too bold a statement for a young lass?
And wearing the same clothes out a few nights in a row might send the wrong message about your rate of laundry turnover.

so why is she dressed differently, then?

Word on the street says Jb was at both events.
And ran into similar groups of people and their flatmates.

Could be, could be.

hang on, the girl on the right looks familiar…. like one of the happy people at the cashews gig.

I would much prefer the classic rubenesque curves than something that resembles a waifish refugee from Belsen. I would hardly call the three lasses pictured “fat”.

But we live in a society where the perceived fat people are the only “group” that can be targeted and victimised. You can’t poke shite at people for their race, creed and sexual preferences anymore, but the fatties are still an acceptable target.

But just remember that with obesity on the rise, it is you skinny people that will soon be the minority and us fatties will rule the world. (cue to evil, maniacal laugh: HAHAHAHAHAHAH)

I hate Goth: he was our worst PM ever.

(By the way – the women in the photo at the top have nothing to be ashamed of: I think they all look absolutely lovely.

Requirement?

Listen to metal dude, upgrade, get some stuff on CD. Iron Maiden were in Australia in February, Motorhead were here recently too.

Want to stop your kids from using those classic albums as playthings? Start scaring them with some black metal like Dimmu Borgir, Mayhem and Naxzul and they’ll fear you, and we all know that fear is just respect with more authority attached! haha!

Jeez man if you like those bands you’re already an elder statesman of metal!!!

You just need to represent, get your photo taken at a metal night out (similar to Vamp but more ‘metal’) and then post it on Riot-ACT where petty bitches like Mary Whitehouse, Queenie and Seekay can use you to make fun of as an escape from their miserable existences.

Mary Whitehouse you’re a bigot and if you saw Souxie and the Banshees in the 80’s it sounds like you’re a bit of a has-been or perhaps never-was. The Goodies reference is passe, irrelevant and doesn’t disguise the fact that you ma’am are a hater!

Seekay! Kraftwerk, that speaks volumes to me, volumes from the Encyclopedia Shittannica. You’d be better for it if you turned into a metalhead (your webos may drop and some blood might start pumping to your flaccid member for example) but we’re doing just fine without you thankyou very much.

How boring would this world be if it was populated by people all with minds the likes of yours?

Don’t get me wrong I’m sure you have your place in it, but so do they and so do I.

This little article has really done well in drawing out some truly ugly people.

The trouble is that laughing at Mary Whitehouse eventually made her irrelevant.

Laughing at Hetty Johnson legitimises child abuse.

Therefore shooting presents itself as a possible solution.

Go goths!

I am always impressed how goths soldier on in pursuit of their goth lifestyle despite the fact that pretty much every culture, sub or otherwise, likes to have a laugh at them and stick the boot in – sometimes literally.

Goths often seem to try to ‘out goth’ each other and that can end with some creations that may seem ludicrous to the normal eye, but are a welcome and refreshing counterpoint to the Stocks/Parliament style that regrettably dominates the vapid youth of Canberra.

Keep it up ladies (and gents) – this town needs your (lack of) colour.

FWIW – I am not a goth (but have a couple of Ministry albums) and am wearing a Raiders jumper at the mo’.

Come on guys, Mrs Whitehouse is simply trolling.

Ignore “her” comments.

Goodies fans would remember who the original Mary Whitehouse was … nasty piece of work mining the same sorts of public sentiments that Hetty Johnston does today.

And I reckon you Goth girls look great!

I think they look great.

I would have loved to have had a goth phase – but I went straight from ‘geeky square’ to ‘career public servant’ with no stops.

Got to say I’m with Mrs Whitehouse on this stream. Those three are enough to turn this Kraftwerk fan into a metalhead.

There is an unfortunate habit amongst some women who have low self esteem. They loudly run down other women, particularly when men are present because they think this might make them more accepted. Luckily it very rarely works because men are often more tolerant and broadminded about how people look than women anyway. I think this thread has proved that.

Keep on with your stream of baseless vitriolic, Mary, you are proving my theory.

Why are all goth girls fat?

I once knew a young girl who was told she was fat.

In reality she was beautiful, with glorious red hair, a wicked sense of fun, a keen mind and many artistic talents.

Unfortunately she believed this person and developed an acute eating disorder which affected her moods and personality and caused her to leave home prematurely. Her straight A grades dropped to the point of failing school and she became caught up in a cycle of low self-esteem that led to drug use and hepatitis.

She nearly had her life back together when she died horribly after a ‘friend’ spiked her drink with methadone.

What a different life she could have led if that person had treated her with dignity and respect – if they had looked for something kind to say in order to build up and not to tear down.

A friend’s brother also developed anorexia after the vicious teasing he received at school. This caused years of untold anguish for his family.

I wish people would realise that verbal and emotional abuse can be just as harmful as physical abuse in their own way, and like a pebble in a pool the ripples can sometimes spread much further than you expect.

Is that really what you want? Do you really need to make other people feel worse in order to feel better about yourself?

Why should you care how much they weigh? How does it affect you? How is it even any of your business?

I think the girls look lovely, but there is an ugliness in you that no make-up can conceal.

IMHO women curvy and full figured women are far more attractive on the eye than any anorexic waifs.

There used to be a Goth bar/night-club in Garema place many years ago. It was downstairs (near Happy’s) and I’m sure that it was called “Circus Circus”

I remember going in there once very early one morning with some friends and we were definitely made to feel quite unwelcome by the patrons as we were in non-goth “normal clothes”. Previously the establishment had been a rather seedy place called “The Subway” which used to stay open until quite late in the morning… typically it was one of the very last places to visit on a big night out before you headed home… I remember coming out of there once and being startled that it was already daylight!

Considering the Goth movement started in obscurity as a “Loose Collective” of people who did not conform to the norm, its pretty norm nowadays.

If non conformists all conform to a unique non conforming dress style is it still non conformity ?

The essence of Goth died in the early to mid 80’s after the death of dark wave synth pop (Which I am very much still a fan of, think “I Ran” by A Flock Of Seagulls) – but a husk of goth still survives, Like Neo Nazis, the true believers are gone, just not the same as is used to be.

All in all, I still reckon its a hot look, for teh chicks at least

Roawrrrr!

Goths seem to have got pinker than they used to be. Used to be thick white face stuff, perhaps very red lippy and black eyeliner, points if it was smeared a bit a la Robert Smith. I always liked The Damned. Not sure that they were a goth band though, or a bunch of clowns dressed as goths.

Hm, wow, people took my comment a lot more seriously than I meant it. All I can think to say is I really didn’t mean it that way and I’m sorry to the people I made feel bad.

Emo, goth, same difference. I love the way Melbournians call the silly kids in black who hang round Flinders Street Station “Clock Goths”. A little Google Image work will help explain matters to Canberrans who don’t know what a railway station is, let alone a city.

As for the down at the Grail goths as opposed to goth goths, it’s a free country. You can ride an old Triumph and dress like one of the characters from The Leather Boys and call yourself a mod if you really want to – and don’t mind the rest of the world wetting themselves.

Great pic – looks like fun.

(Fat) girls, don’t worry about me. I’m old enough to have seen Siouxsie and the Banshees when they first toured Australia back in 1983 (who, they ask).

I don’t get goth goths, though. Back then goths were a joke. Even the name was said tongue firmly in (sucked in to accentuate the cheekbones) cheek. The bands had joke names. Sex Gang Children. Alien Sex Fiend. Todays its all doom and gloom and I’m going to slit my wrists ‘cos you called me fat even though I am. Bor-ing.

Being one of the girls in that photo, I take offence to that.

There are fat girls in every social group. There are also plenty of skinny ones. Especially in the goth crowd.

In my time I’ve seen more than enough fat skanky Moose girls melting out of their leggings and tank tops. At least the goth girls have some decency to wear things that don’t make people want to gauge their eyes out.

So shut up already.

Laurel… Just so you know, I think you’re all hot! 😉

Katie – you may notice that JB posted the photo not the girls. I also find it interesting that you seem to think people aren’t allowed to get upset from insults. Are you a bully by any chance?

Amusing that they are concerned about “goth wannabes”…. I admit I don’t know a lot about gothic subculture, but I thought that part of being a goth is NOT conforming. Judging people for not conforming to the percieved “correct” goth image seems to go against that ideal.

Do goth gals only date goth guys? Coz i quite likes dark hair and pale skin but am not prepared to be all fake and dress similar just to pick up a vamp.

Let’s not be rude about people kind enough to be in our photos eh?

NIN is right up there in my top 3, and i quite like rammstein too. does this mean i am in denial of my gothness? should i come out as a goth? christ.
