Vanishing Cat Sign.

On a trip to Cook shops yesterday, I checked as always do, the “local notice board”. It’s a source of bargains, and not a few lunatic services/ courses /get rich quick schemes. (“Knit your own feng-shui garlic dream-catchers, make $$$$!”).

However one notice was rather astonishing. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera with me, so I couldn’t take a shot.

I’ve just been down there with my camera, and a hang-over, but the sign has gone. The polt thickens!!

It was printed on an inkjet printer, properly capitalised and punctuated, (the first things to look for when spotting the…less hinged…posters work). To the best of my memory ability, it read;

Do you own a cat in Cook?

Then you’d better learn how to keep it in your yard or your house, especially at night.

Otherwise you may not have it at the end of 2009!

Several things about it puzzled me;

a) Is it a threat or an alert?

b) Was it aimed at the whole cat owning community, or an individual?

c) Why the long time scale, why not; “by the end of May!”?

d) Why no phone number, or contact details, for further information?

e) Will there be a new notice at the end of 2009, advertising “genuine cat skin gloves cheap”?

WTF, why is Cat crap in sand pits such a recurring theme here?

Seriously, how many people have sand pits!?

People with kids. Kids pick up stuff and put it in their mouth. Kid catches Toxoplasmosis and gets really sick. One of the reasons stray cats make families nervous.

Actually, Toxoplasmosis primarily causes problems for women who become infected during pregnancy. Up to 90% of the population (depending on country) is infected. For the vast proportion of the population, toxoplasmosis causes no ill effects. In addition, it can also be acquired by eating soft cheeses (thus accounting for the high infection rate of some European populations).

Instead of killing, try calling the pound to come and get the stray cat, dog or whatever pet. If the owner didn’t microchip it, bad luck. If they do, they’ll have to pay (if I’m not wrong) the pound to have the animal released.

ClownKiller – (#47). What would the weekly hire be on your slug gun? I have numerous pest problems I can see it fixing.

I’ve just been interviewed for this afternoons radio show on 2CC Radio. I cannot think why anyone would want to know about my seeing a sign, one which I really haven’t got a clue about.

It may go down in history as the interview which caused several Canberra road accidents, by sending drivers to sleep.

We have recently got a puppy, and while we are toilet training him we have been opening the door to let him out, on an occasion letting the cat out a few times.

Kambah pet haters – did you see a the Austrian restaurant Kambah (near Burnes Club) has now turned into a Thai place. They may be accepting cats & dogs to start up with??

Joking aside, my kitty is an inside puss and as old as the hills with bad kidneys but can still catch the mice that are stupid enough to come inside. Keep your cats inside – at least at night, they are all snuggly and good company at the very least. Unfortunately also killing machines for little animals.

Given my previous comments in regards to cats, I’d better point out that this sign is not of my doing. 🙂

Could act as a bit of a wake-up call for those cat owners in that area who let their cats roam free overnight though.

That’s sad Hank, hope the kitten find its way home soon.

I live in Cook and our little kitten has just gone missing.

Tuesday 28th of April she never came in for dinner.

If this person has taken our cat we would like her back, as she has a young family looking for her every night, and are quite devastated with her disappearance.

Any help or advice would be great.

It’s the owner of the large brown dog that jumps over my fence and attacks my chooks inside their run that will find their dog rather sick after eating some rat poison. I can’t let my daughters out before I check the yard for this monster of a dog.

Kambah, Sulwood Drive, big brown dog… lock it up or I will be sending it the way of the cats.. The restaurant down the road 🙂

doubt that the sri lankan restaurant wants it. or the spring garden at kambah village.

I have 2 cats, they live in a cat run, and spend most of their lives sleeping. the other 2 hours are complaining about food, and eating.

Have you contacted the owner? Called the Council? Done anything proactive about stopping the dog beyond posting here? No animal deserves to die like that.

Idiot.

Certainly sounded like you get fun out of it to me.

Nope, not even close. I think you are confusing people who destroy problematic vermin with people who torture animals for fun.
There is no difference between exterminating a cat, rabbit, fire ant, fox, european wasp, rodent or any other type of declared pest. Provided it is a quick death.

We have a sand pit. I also have a slug gun. We don’t have any cat poo in our sand pit.

i find cat-haters a really oddball bunch of people, probably sitting somewhere on the serial killer scale.

Cat owners are nothing more than serial-killers-by-proxy. The damage so called ‘domesticated’ cats do is phenomenal. Cats should be caged or killed.

Just spent a very enjoyable weekend fishing, on the way back to base of a night we paddock bashed about and squished a few feral cats and rabbits.

Overall, reminds me of this: http://www.collegehumor.com/picture:131215

What damage are you referring to exactly? Just the killing of birds?

I’d love to have a quoll.

Hating is one thing. It’s when they start torturing them such as pulling out their claws.

Ah heck. At least Pandy tried to punctuate. It seems slightly better than not punctuating at all.

I’ve got heaps of roos but they don’t come when they’re called. And a cocky has adopted me, he sits on the railing outside and follows me around the house, looking in through the window.

Landowners have had the right to shoot any dog they see wandering on their land, as a dog can destroy livestock, or form a pack with other wandering dogs and do even more damage. We’ve just had new people move into the district, and sure enough, there’s a fat dog wandering around in the morning.

I believe the law was recently amended to allow landowners to shoot wandering cats on their land also, if they believed the cat was likely to cause menace to desirable wildlife or livestock (poultry etc).

Feline Influenza. That’s F-E-L-I-N-E Influenza.

H-U-M-A-N-S c-a-n-‘-t c-a-t-c-h f–e–l–i–n–e i-n-f-l-u-e-n-z-a

But cats should be kept inside and only taken out on a harness. I have cats, but walk them on lead and have built a meshed outdoor structure for them. Cat breeding should outlawed as there too many cats. People that don’t desex cats should be desexed themselves. Australian natives would make better pets for australia, I’d have a diprotodon.

if it is a true ‘scale’, toriness, then everyone fits on your serial killer scale. personally, the ‘totally isn’t one’ is the end for me…

Not sure if it is ignorance or arrogance to describe some cat owners. Our yard has become bit of a gathering for about 4 cats. No idea who the owners are, but they look like pets rather than strays. And the only solution is for me to hire a cage, give it to the RSPCA who can then return it to the owner. And then start all over again.

why should all steps to keep my garden free of other people’s cats be done at my expense

i find cat-haters a really oddball bunch of people, probably sitting somewhere on the serial killer scale.

no room is too small to swing a cat, in case anyone was wondering… ; )

Pommy bastard7:52 am 03 May 09

The biggest pest I have found in the area is urban foxes, not cats. One had two of my chooks.

I also like cats, but understand that they are often ruthless killers. It is the way they have evolved, and a few thousand years of semi-domestication is to going to change that.

I’d love to own a cat, but trying to find rental accommodation in Canberra that allows cats (or pets in general) is almost impossible. And what’s funny is that some of what’s on offer is so dismally run-down – what on earth do some of these landlords think they have to be houseproud about? Is there just an epidemic of Mrs Buckets (i.e From Keeping Up Appearances show from the BBC) going on? 🙂

They probably couldn’t be arsed fixing the place after the last cat/dog/whatever wrecked it.

Landlords don’t need to be houseproud. Don’t like the house don’t rent it. Want to have the freedom to have whatever pets in your house then buy one

Cat flu has been around for years! Nothing scary here…. except for the vet bill for the annual vaccinations

I love cats. I positively adore my cats. This is why I keep them safe and sound 24/7. If not in their run, they are wandering about indoors.

I love the wild creatures that visit my yard, and I know that said creatures would not visit so frequently if I let my cats outside. Simple solution – my bathtub now houses a litter tray, my cats are happy and healthy, and will live a long life.

What a nasty person to threaten an animal like that – Karma will repay in kind.

I have to run, my polt is boiling and thickening on the stove…

Yup, “Golden Seas Chinese restaurant”….

Any chinese restaurants at the Cook shops?..

Whilst I disagree with the means of transmission, I agree with the sentiment.

someoneincanb6:29 pm 02 May 09

My understanding is that stray and roaming cats can cover a lot of ground. Maybe the offending cat owner doesn’t live in Cook? I wonder if the sign-poster has thought of this, and sign-posted at other shopping centres as well to give fair warning. I also thought it was the law that cats are kept in at night. I am happy none of my neighbours have them and it is not an issue for me anymore.

I thought it was law that they (cats) had to be in overnight. At least thats why mine is always inside…

Pommy bastard5:53 pm 02 May 09

It’s a lovely word, isn’t it?

GardeningGirl5:48 pm 02 May 09

I love cats but I also love gardening (bet ya didn’t expect that) and it’s not just sandpits that are a problem. Are we supposed to cover everything because someone down the street is a supposed cat-lover but doesn’t consider a catrun a worthwhile investment? Here’s a word to pay attention to . . . toxoplasmosis.

I inadvertently deleted a whole section of my previous by mistake, sorry. It should have read:

I love cats, particularly with a nice pepper sauce and Cab. Sav.

Seriously though, I’ve owned a few cats and like them. I prefer they stay indoors as I hate cat crap in sandpits and dead birds, then again, my dog has killed a few birds in years past too. If I have a problem with a neighbours animal I approach the owner. Taking some ‘shotgun’ warning approach at the shops, as proposed by VY at post #1, is a bit lame and may end up with no result.

Wow pandy – you got to use that nugget of a post twice. I hope you used cut and paste the second time. I’d hate to think you don’t know how to punctuate “aren’t”.

Are’nt cats supposed to be caged these days?

Wandering cats at night are a pain in the ar$e (crapping in kids sandpits etc), a threat to wildlife, and show a complete lack of responsibility by cat owners.

Sounds to me like a chickenshit attempt to deal with a local cat, rather than either:
a) Speaking with the owners, if known; or
b) Getting a cat trap from the RSPCA and returning both trap AND animal.
