Veterans Park to House ACT War Memorial - Isn't it already doing something?

ABC Online has the strange news that our local gubbmint, perhaps sick of having to be invited to federal memorial services, has decided to plonk down its own memorial in Veterans Park in Civic. Despite Canberra already being home to one of the finest War Memorials in all the world.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but having been through the plaques there a few years ago, I was under the impression the park was meant to be commemorating police veterans?

Why do we have to strip them of their place (or at least devalue their prominence in it) for a War Memorial which is only of any use to our vainglorious local politicians?

The Chief Minister’s media release adds little light.

This smacks of political opportunism. There is currently no memorial along ANZAC Parade to commemorate those who have died on civilian ops or in training and with the recent Sea King crash there has been pressure on the federal government to award a medal to those killed, quite a ridiculous notion actually.

As such there has been talk of a new memorial built on ANZAC parade to commemorate service people killed while not on ops, and thats quite a few, I can remember two guys getting killed when their bucket rolled on K89.

And so we appear to have Stanhope jumping the gun and showing up the Feds.

But on the other hand, for once he’s actually going to do something and I have no problem with a commemorative stone or whatever in civic. Its about time that a politician actually acknowledged that military life is nothing like civie street.
