VHS disposal in Canberra?

Hi wise and wonderful people.

We have two cupboards full of pre-recorded and errr not pre-recorded, VHS video tapes. Any which that have items of sentimental value on them have been long burned onto DVD.

How and where can we dispose of these in a morally sound, environmental aware and socially conscious way?

If you have old recorded TV shows from the 80s, I recommend digitising the advertisements and putting them on youtube. The station promos are always good for a laugh.

Or send them to me!!

You could pull the tape out of the VHS cartridges and sell the empty VHS cartridges on ebay. Frequently they arrive broken when they are sent through the mail.

Hope you’ve double checked them all for your special “home movies”

I sold them on at Adam and Eve…

Now retitled “Cornish Pasties”

Interestingly enough, the plural of “Pasty” is “Pastys”, down in the county of Cornwallshire. I believe we have a resident Cornish person (Thumper?) who will confirm.

That’s a big ask…

You can just chuck them into your wheely bin and have it taken away to a landfill.

Or, you can go to one of those disposal depots and pay $$$, and be socially conscious that they get thrown into landfill anyway. (plastic isn’t really recyclable with the current technology available, so landfill is the only option). This way your moral is protected, ’cause you did the right thing, right?

Either way, you are now environmentally aware.

You own a Mercedes? Awesome…

It depends what’s on the tapes, I guess. Maybe (a big maybe) the National Film and Sound Archives, or even the National Archives may have a use for them. If not, given that maybe they both had the same problem on a large scale in the past, they may know where or how to dispose of them responsibly…

Pull them apart – the black tape makes great Halloween party streamers.

there is a trick I did once on a quiet country road… got the full spool out of an E240, drilled a hole in the centre for a piece of dowel, drilled in a couple of screws to hold the spool in one spot on the dowel, and at about 20km/hr started feeding the tape out of the spool out of the window. Eventually the wind and the friction grabbed the trailing end and the spool started to spin roilly roilly fast. Increased speed to something more meaningful, getting on for 100km/hr if I remember correctly, and watched in awe at the speed that the spool turned as the tape unwound. Several thousand rpm with the centre of the spool just starting to melt from the heat on the dowel.

Took a bit longer to do the right thing and collect the several hundred metres of tape though.

Anyway maybe we could organise a spool off down at Lake George with your tapes?

Any op shop will take the pre-recorded ones

Aussie Junk (Mitchell) or Tiny’s Shed (Mugga Lane) or like mentioned Lifeline and Vinnies take and sell that sort of stuff

LOL!! Ok, I’ll take it there’s no set up for disposing of them. One would imagine that there will be many millions dumped in coming years.

They’re 99% plastic and probably suitable for turning into recycled plastic items like fence posts and the like. So I suspect the recycling bin is as good as any option

Burn them in a 44 gallon drum in the front yard with some spare 2 stroke and wash the smoldering remains down the storm water drain out the front of your house at about 2am in the morning so your neighbours don’t get all “what about the endangered sea turtles!” at ya.

You could donate the pre-recorded ones to Lifeline for their book fair and trash the home movies.

Well, you could research a country somewhere that still uses VCRs and mail them there.

err…that big fricking bin on your driveway?
