In review:

Bands – great.

Turnout – rather average.

Volume – just a bit too loud to hear myself think.

I understand a bit of money was raised and all worked out well.

ED – Farnarkler sent in another view which I’ve appended here:

The setup there assumed a couple of thousand would be turning up but at 4pm there were about 300 people. I know there was a lot on this weekend but I thought Canberrans would be up for a free (ok, donation on entry) gig. I hadn’t seen Tonk or Night Train before. Not bad, not bad at all. The organisers even had a roped off area complete with marquees (sic) which remained devoid of VIPs all afternoon.

Well the promotion for it was poor, though I did see some ads for it on tv in the days preceeding. Probably the most underlying problem is that people have given pretty much everything they can already and are probably sick of it now. I don’t think any more of these event are needed at this time.

Advertising/Promotion – Almost non-existant.

I found out about this gig when I drove past the single sign erected on Commonwealth Avenue – by which time the whole show was nearly finished.

I just walked past an ad for this gig a few minutes ago.

I don’t mean this to sound insensitive, but does house insurance cover bushfire?

it depends on several things. If you had increased your assets, but didn’t update your policy to cover them, then no.

if you had extended the house, again, with no extra cover, no.

many people who lost everything couldn’t afford coverage, or lost items that weren’t covered by the insurer. The fact that the rest of the country gets up and helps out others when they are struck by a disaster is a testament to the australian spirit. These acts, be it a donation at the red cross, attending a charity concert, or banding together with neighbors to donate esentials to the people affected are what defines our community. There is no personal gain in it, it just is the right thng to do.

and it makes me proud to be a part of it.

brisbane is having a benefit gig, called fire and flood this friday with powderfinger, the grates, john steele singers and others. I am flying up for it this friday morning.

plus the canberra one had no ‘good’ bands, (as in ones that people recognise) the whole weekend was a bit busy for anyone to turn up at a no name gig, even if it was for charity.

I saw that the traffic lights were working on Commonwealth ave, so wondered why, then saw the sign for it on the side of the road there…

I also saw the lights working there LAST weekend, and thought “hmm I wonder if there’s a bushfire concert”… but apparently there was something else last weekend.

Never heard of it before. Where was it advertised?

I also did not hear about it until now.

We were there from 1pm and were two of the six people that weren’t organisers (I exaggerate – but there was practically no one). It was a very silly weekend to have it. Government house was also open which brought over 8000 people according to the CT. Maybe they should have thought about merging them together… and wasn’t the Hall markets on too… or is that next weekend? Not a lot of forward thinking i’d say.

I don’t mean this to sound insensitive, but does house insurance cover bushfire?

They should have invited the Cat Empire over!

I think that was the problem; lack of advertising. CT had 1000 people attending but that must’ve been in total as there was nothing like that when we were there.

It could’ve been held this coming weekend after payday however then it would clash with the Canberra festival. The organisers were really between the proverbial rock and hard place what with the show and Corinbank, etc.

Never heard of it before. Where was it advertised?

Wouldn’t it make sense to have the concerts in VIC and QLD?

Maybe because a large part of their state has been burnt or is underwater?

Given a large part of the population of these areas has been affected it makes no sense to hold a benefit in those areas and more sense to raise funds in an unaffected area.

That’s my reasoning, for what it’s worth.

One of the concerts is in Victoria at the MCG. Brisbane is not near the floods so not sure why one isn’t being held there.

re the turnout. You’re going up against a music festival which people would have paid for weeks or months ago and against the Canberra Show. Add to that the very short notice with minimal advertising and it’s not really surprising that the turnout was low.

They probably would have been better off to hold off a week or two or add it in as part of the Canberra celebrations coming up or done a deal with 104.7 and skyfire to get donations there.

I’m a bit dissapointed in the sound aid concerts held to benefit both the Bushfires and the NQ flood, dont get me wrong its a great cause and I hope they raise a lot of money but considering its to benefit VIC and QLD, why the hell is one of the concerts in NSW.

Wouldn’t it make sense to have the concerts in VIC and QLD?

Tonk’s singer was in hospital recovering from Pneumonia on Thursday. Pretty good effort to be screaming your lungs out by Sunday Arvo.
