Vietnam vets honoured

Thumper 14 May 2008 4

The SMH is reporting that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson attended a Parliament House reception for the veterans of the battles of Fire Support Bases Coral and Balmoral in May 1968.

26 Australian soldiers died in action.

Both Rudd and Nelson acknowledged that Australia didn’t necessarily treat soldiers returning from the Vietnam War with the respect they deserved.

There will be a national commemorative ceremony at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra to mark the 40th anniversary of the battle.

A fantastic read. As an old Gunner, reading accounts of the Guns firing splintex over open sights into massed infantry stirs the soul.

Geez, what a function. There was about 1500 people and about 600L of beer was served over 3 hours.

I read an excellent book about the events at FSB Coral and Balmoral, i think written by one of the vets (Les Macauley, perhaps? my memory sucks).

Fascinating read, grab a copy from a good second hand store (cough *CANTYS* cough) if you get a chance.
