square rock

Hi Guys,

In my ongoing efforts to break the death grip that the X-Box has on my kids, I took them out to do the walk to Square Rock a couple of days ago.

It was a brilliant sunny day, and the walk is very easy going and remarkably pleasant, with magnificent views in all directions at the end. The pic shows the view from the rock towards Canberra. Civic, Anzac Parade and the AWM are all visible in the far distance.

I’d give it a difficulty rating of about 2. Total distance is 9km round trip, with gentle climbs on a well marked path. It’s advertised as a 4 hour trip, but it took us a little over an hour each way at a moderate pace with a few breaks for drinks and snacks.

To get there, drive along the Corin road about 13 km to the recreation centre. About 800m past the recreation centre on the right there is a clearly marked car park, which has a signpost indicating the start of the trail.

There were quite a few other people out there on the day. What surprised me was the number of people who seemed to be totally unprepared for the walk. There was one group of asian tourist types dressed in shorts and t-shirts, wearing open toed street sandals and carrying nothing but a couple of cameras. No water or bush kit of any kind.

If you do go out there, remember that you’ll end up 4.5 km down the track from help if anything goes wrong. A simple trip and fall is quite possible and could result in injury and unexpected delays, so a backpack with a simple medical kit, some water, food and a space blanket would be a sensible precaution.

While you have to be lucky with the timing, the Square Rock walk is at its best when there’s light snow cover, followed up by a sneaky ride on the Corin toboggan.

🙂 Very nice! That sounds worth a visit.

A great walk! Have done it a number of times (and great area to see the lyrebird) but also *watch for snakes*.
Similar great walk is Booroomba Rocks… All up hill on the way up but much shorter. Have seen plenty of kids at the top enjoying the views.

Thanks to LSW for his directions. Through Riot am collecting a good number of places to visit out there in the bush.
