Lobby group Fair Go for Canberra will stage a candlelight vigil on Thursday to highlight coalition funding cuts to national cultural institutions.

The Unenlighten Festival will take place on the lawn between Questacon and the National Gallery at 6pm.

The group claims the Turnbull government has cut $60 million in funding from national cultural institutions, coming on top of cuts from the Abbott government in 2014.

These cuts will cause long-term damage but save little overall, the group says.

“The institutions dedicated to preserving and celebrating our shared cultural heritage are now facing enormous pressure to close exhibitions, sack staff and stop important projects,” Fair Go for Canberra said in a statement.

“Whether it is our fine art or our comic relief, our iconic films or our oral history, our war memories or our family ancestry, we all need our cultural institutions to continue preserving our past and protecting our cultural heritage.

“These are cruel cuts that Canberra can’t afford, and that Australia doesn’t deserve.

“That’s why it is so important that we send a strong message to Mr Turnbull and his government that the Canberra community opposes these cuts.”

I don’t know what a Fairfax tinge is, but I think you’ll find Mick to be one of the most level-headed, unbiased journalists/editors around.

“Fairfax tinge”? Probably some terribly old-fashioned notion of objectivity in both the scope and content of reporting journalism. 🙂

Hear hear. I believe everyone should have to post under their real names.

Just how would that work exactly. Would posters would need to give proof of identity to sites like RiotAct before they can register to post comments ?? Without that, posters could claim to be just about who ever they want.

Mick Reid is a former Fairfax journalist who did a two week stint with us last month. I’ll ask him to set up a user profile and add him to featured contributors this week as he will continue to write for us.

Thanks for that Charlotte.
I couldn’t find any links to a Mick Reid and Fairfax media anywhere on the internet so I look forward to viewing his profile.
There is definitely a “Fairfax tinge” in his writings though.

Lobby group Fair Go for Canberra is just a front for Unions ACT. They share the same address at 189 Flemington Rd Mitchell. As such it is just a pro-Labor, Anti-Liberal rant fest with the usual agendas, masquerading as a community organisation.

Hear hear. I believe everyone should have to post under their real names.

I’m all for exposing the names of all Lobby groups, they are used equally by both sides and used in elections with fake name parties directing preferences back to their masters. Let’s not pretend that only Labor does this though.

How about you name them all?
Let’s start with GetUp.

Sure, what about Can the Tram or Australian Hotels Association for example?

I am not familiar with Can the Tram but the AHA is an agent for an Industry Super Fund so no prizes for guessing for which side of the political fence they are on.

Indeed it is. Two minutes on Google exposes the ‘community driven’ claim on Fair Go for Canberra’s website as, well, not completely accurate.

Unless….

Perhaps the good people at UnionsACT noticed large groups of depressed-looking people were hanging around the streets late at night, utterly at a loss as to what they could do to ‘save their community’.

Being only interested in helping people, the kindly union took them in and gave them shelter, allowing them time to decide what they needed to do to ‘save their community’ and get ‘a fair go’.

After an exhaustive examination of all options, which lasted well into morning tea time, the group decided that the only solution was to keep voting Labor.

Hearing this, the kindly union man said “What an amazing coincidence!! I happen to know a few people in the Labor Party! I believe we can help!”

While I agree that our cultural heritage should be preserved I don’t think the planned demonstration is going to change anything.
Wouldn’t it be more productive to spend that time in raising money for the purpose?
What about a sausage sizzle for starters?

The most effective thing to do would be to join the growing lobbying strength of P J Collins’s national Arts Party …

So, who is this newcomer Mick Reid who appears to have only started contributing late in April.
There is nothing about him on the “Featured Contributors” section.

Perhaps our local artists could ask to paint their works onto the hulls of the new submarine fleet worth $50 billion and cash in on some of the “vital” expenditure this government is making. Why aren’t all Australians protesting about THAT ridiculous notion, instead of worrying about what in effect is only 0.12% of the amount being wasted on “defensive technologies”.
