Vikings for the ARC

Just heard on the radio that the name of the Canberra team in the Australian Rugby Championship (the long awaited national competition) is going to be the “Canberra Navy Vikings”.

One assumes the RAN are going to be major sponsors.

At least Gandalf Fisher won’t be around to transfix the backline at this level.

Airforce: Comets.
Army: Nights.

C’mon gals if it is good enuff for the navy.

Navy are sponsoring the Brumbies this year, so it would kind of make sense to also sponsor the Vikings. Plus Navy Vikings goes nicely with the boat theme – although not with Canberra being land-locked. Anyways, there’s a crapload of keen rugby fans in Navy offices around Canberra, so they’ll be very happy to cheer for the team.

Perhaps we should be the Jervis Bay Navy Vikings?

It is a bit weird to have a Canberra club side’s name be the one representing the ACT. I mean Vikins are not indiginous to the ACT, last I checked (other than as a second cousin to a Raider).
Are you sure it’s navy and not navvy?

EDIT:

in the above – substitute Collar Bone for shoulder blade – too much revision going on today – good thing I’m not a medico . . .

Poster this in the podcast thread first:

Thank God the CT isn’t a medical Journal. Larkham’s “Sternum” injury so well described with a graphic of a rib cage’ is actually a shoulder blade injury. If it (the shoulder blade ie the clavicular) had dislocated where it attachs to the sternum, he’d have been sidelined for the rest of this season if not longer. Its a relatively rare and painful injury.

its a grass cricket pitch FFS. they’ll get over it, or like every other rugby player that met one of these, ensure that you DONT get tackled on the bloody thing.

Back in the mid-90’s, we used to have a team known as the Canberra Kookaburras in the Sydney RU competition.

The Kookaburras used to play their home games at Manuka Oval. It’s been done before, so I guess there’s no reason why it can’t be done again in the future.

There are plenty of ovals around Australia which get dual usage – cricket in summer, footy in winter. Granted, most of them would be used for Australian Rules given the shape of the fields.

If the Navy was to sponsor anyone, I’d have thought the Sydney “Fleet” would be the ideal choice.

I remember going to Manuka for the Brumbies games, with the players warming up behind you, you could hear the coach’s instructions. That gameagainst the Sharks where Roff scored 3 (4?) tries was fantastic.

I also remember getting tacked on the cricket pitch during semi-final time… you always felt that!

I don’t care what they’re called, I’m going to back them all the way to a grand final win. Manuka Oval is a little strange, I would have thought Viking Park was perfect. Oh well though, matters not really.

I was thinking that it was a bit lame to have the Canberra team named the Vikings (as we already had a vikings), but the other teams appear to be outdoing each other with new, and stupid names like: the Tornados (Nth QLD / Ballymore), the Aces (Sth Qld / Gold Coast), and the Fleet (Sydney City).

Kramer, one of the Sydney teams will be using North Sydney oval – also a cricket oval at times…so no worries.

I’m more worried about the “Navy Vikings” – we are a coastal city aren’t we…

I recall that Manuka oval was for some time the venue for the local competition’s grand final – probably up until Viking Park was built. It worked well then, and I would expect that any decent groundsman would be able to manage the football/cricket conflict (viz the MCG).

I just stumbled across this indicating that Canberra’s home ground will be Manuka Oval. WTF? Did someone forget that this is a cricket oval, with a real cricket pitch in the middle? This is supposed to be a national level competition, so why don’t we play at Canberra Stadium (OK its probably booked out by the mungo boys or too expensive for the expected attendance), or Viking Park?
