Brumbies Rugby reports in a pre-season game played at Viking Park in Erindale last night, the Canberra Navy Vikings were defeated by the West Sydney Rams 28-10. Our boys put in a bit of a lack lustre performance for their first outing, with Solomona Fainifo scoring the only try for the Vikings. I just hope they can pull themselves together for the opening game of the ARC next week.

I’m sure they’ll improve.

I was there. It’s easy to think of excuses – some would include that it was just a trial, that a number of players who will be first choice when th comp gets serious either didn’t play or only came on late, that there was the lack of continuity that should be expected when there are changes to the lineup on both sides every few minutes. Both sides butchered a lot more tries than they scored and the Vikings were a bit worse than the Rams. There was a little uncertainty with new rules taking out a lot of kicking options and forcing dodgy passes and midfield “nothing” kicks. Laurie Fisher (Brumbies coach, possible next Wallaby coach) was the waterboy, which was amusing – more like Billy Connolly than Gandalf, but with a resemblance to both. It was a frightening sight.

There was some talent on the hoof out there and the games, starting next week, will be worth seeing (even if it means missing a local game next week).
