The Chief Minister is letting us know she’s been to the opening of Virgin’s terminal at Canberra Airport:

Katy Gallagher joined the Federal Transport Minister, Hon Anthony Albanese, and the chief executive of Virgin Australia, John Borghetti, at the opening.

The new Virgin Australia facilities are part of the $420 million ‘AirVolution’ rebuild that Canberra Airport Group is undertaking and marks the completion of stage two of the project.

More than two million overnight travellers come to the ACT annually. A further 1.7 million people make day trips. Almost 163,500 international visitors arrived in Canberra, in the 2012 calendar year.

“The new airport – which has been emerging progressively from the old one – is a major step forward for Canberra as a destination for both domestic and international visitors,” Katy Gallagher says.

“The new airport has top-quality departure areas, lounges, and passenger facilities.

“Canberra loves it.

I still think the art scattered around the airport buildings is miles ahead of the stuff the ACT govt buys and scatters around roads etc.

An interesting story that will come out at some point is that ACT government had a new piece of moving sculpture planned for the roadside near the airport. And the 11th hour, before it was plunked into place, the Airport objected on various grounds (including that the art’s presence might interfere with their future plans… on public land?!), but it was later revealed that this art was similar in some ways to the Airport’s moving sculpture, the silver globby one you see when on the overpass.

So the sculpture purchased by ACT government sits in a warehouse somewhere.

How do they know there were 163,500 international visitors?
If you landed say in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne, then caught an internal flight as most do…..how can they count you as coming internationally? Counting foreign passports as valid ID for internal flights?

Read more closely. They mean visited Canberra not landed at the airport, and I’d guess it’s estimated by survey.

Re: the new building, I say good on them for modernising the Canberra airport! A lot nicer for visitors to Canberra to arrive at!
Now, will there be a good shuttle bus service to go with it? 🙂

Oh, you mean Virgin Australia.

Anything about ACTION stopping there? Didn’t think so.

an inanimate object loves an inanimate object – is this possible?

Surely a plebiscite should be held prior to the Chief Minister declaring our love for a thing?

My oath. Syncophantic drivel from politicians should be confined to what they think and know.

Surely a plebiscite should be held prior to the Chief Minister declaring our love for a thing?
