Volunteering in Canberra?

I see there is a thread on this but it’s from 2009 so I thought I’d write an updated one.

I’ve been struggling to find somewhere to volunteer in Canberra, the ones listed on GoVolunteer all seem to require day hours but I work full-time. Also some of them were listed an awful long time ago and seem no longer valid.

I phoned and/or emailed to various community organisations which listed volunteering as an option on their web sites and were told they were all full! Also filled in a form for the Red Cross and haven’t heard back. I’ve had a google but most places are really vague on whether they need volunteers NOW or not, and some have very intrusive forms you have to fill in before you even know if they have positions free!

Anyone have any luck getting a volunteering place or know somewhere which definitely needs people? My method seems to be having no luck so I thought I’d see what other people do.

If you’re still interested Snowy Hydro SouthCare (the primary rescue helicopter in Canberra) would love to hear from you! We hold events on weekends, and always looking for help. Some of the events include fundraising BBQs, third party events that require merchandise stalls (ie. Canberra Show), and helicopter appearances at schools.
Please contact Alison Tonkin on 6207 9923 to discuss how you can get involved!

Why not join a community organisation such as Rotary, Lions, Apex, etc. They often have a variety of community-based activities underway and you can choose which one(s) best suit your time commitments and personal preferences.

Often they get involved in youth projects, local charities, and some of them have very strong international links. For example, the Canberra Rotary clubs are very active in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Community Advocate is always looking for people to be guardians for adults. You can put in as much or as little time as you like.

Volunteering ACT is the peak body for volunteering in the ACT. They’ll have a stack of ideas for you and some general advice on volunteering as well.

Try Meals on Wheels.

The shelters around town always need supportive and helpful people. Their main workload is out of office hours.

what kind of volunteering do you want to do?

I’d suggest scouts, the RSPCA and Vinnies

Gungahlin Community Council is always keen to hear from potential volunteers. We are especially keen to have someone on board with skills in InDesign or DTP in general.
