Volunteers for Beta test needed

About mid last year we started to think that the RiotACT needed a facelift and you may recall us asking how you used the site. Whilst some indicated that they loved it enough shared our sentiments that we needed to try something new and fresh. Over the last couple of months we’ve been working behind the scenes on our new Riot and you may have noticed a few changes in preparation for its unveiling over the last week, most notably the category reorganisation.

We’re almost at a point where we want to release it on the unsuspecting public (although i’ve probably just given away our master plan.. doh!) and need some volunteers to help with a beta test. If you’re at all interested reply below and we’ll be in contact.

Konqueror and Safari both use the KHTML rendering engine. Safari is based on Webkit (the open source component which is used for the actual page rendering etc.).

There are differences between the two but these seem minor (at least in my operation of the two).

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KHTML

Aw don’t wipe him – he’s the most entertaining poster on this site! Regardless of whether he knows it…

Good one Maelinar insult one of the people who can wipe you from the history of Riotact.

@Skid – its more humourous than that. Ever increasing photo presence of him in ‘romantic’ shots, and wistful poses.

Methinks the bell is gonna start clanging pretty soon, if the photographer is still the same person. Sorry to break the news to you JB, it may as well be watermarked over the photos though.

can have a crack at it from an interstate feed if needed.

@caf: Pondering the mysteries of the universe whilst staring wistfully out over the vastness of the Pacific Ocean, I believe.

So, he’s become a retiree, touring the caravan parks of Australia?

I am not microsoft 🙂 (damnit)

Reward: lead tester gets promoted to trial-deputy admin ?

btw, Thumper for Admin !

“if i released it to everyone, i may as well skip testing all together”
MS would…

mostly because i dont want to overload it shauno. Its on a home PC and doesn’t have the speed. but also if i released it to everyone, i may as well skip testing all together

Why dont you just have a link at the top of the page near the log in. Saying I am willing to test the new site. If you say yes the new site is loaded with the option of going back to the old site.

A reward? hmm, i have something in mind for recognition of the effort. lol and its more than just you just get to keep using it.

Thumper will be beta sausage testing then…

Re: “The CD tray is a drinks holder” – for your viewing pleasure:
http://www.gcc.asn.au/content/view/291/282/

Saw a hard drive once that would fit nicely in an old washing machine – about the same size as the milk separator we used to have on our farm… Think it spun about the same speed too.
Skid: “working out how the crap we missed and sorting out listed defects that made it to users” I can recommend a course Comcover does called Risk Management Fundamentals…

Pondering the mysteries of the universe whilst staring wistfully out over the vastness of the Pacific Ocean, I believe.

I spend half of my days Alpha, Beta, and then Production & Patch testing our finance systems, and then working out how the crap we missed and sorting out listed defects that made it to users.

As much as I like it, I like it primarily because I get paid.

Could voluteers be rewarded with IOU pints at O’Sheas or O’Neills, or is it a case of “For helping the Johnboy and the Jazz test the product, you get to continue using the product”?

Where -is- Johnboy these days, anyway?

I built Thumper’s home computer from bits and pieces, an old washing machine, and a number of 5c coins.

The CD tray is a drinks holder, and the A: receptacle is an ashtray.

I’m surprised that the sizzling sound when you turn it on hasn’t turned into anything fatal yet…

Ok, so even IT nerds forget to close HTML tags…

I am an IT nerd, and this proves it: I’m shocked that someone didn’t know what a beta test was.

So your silly question was for the benefit of others you thought might need a little clarification ?

And you want to call me patronising ?

I’ll admit I was a little patronising by inserting how long it took google to find the information, but that is also subtly a teaching point.

Maelinar: I’m nominating you as the village patronising f***wit.

Thanks everyone else for your responses. I can actually use google, and I gathered the gist of the term. I just thought other non-IT nerds like myself might also need some clarification.

Jazz: happy to help with testing, although I think I’m already on the list?

I have a black box that has Dell on the side of it, and with a 22in monitor on top – which is also black. 🙂

Youse is all nerds, I’m telling you! 🙂

“With the advent of DVD technology Beta testing is no longer that common. But in it’s heyday it was used to make sure the conversion from VHS had worked successfully.”

LOL!
GnT: it’s where software developers toss out pre-release version of their program (or in this case website) to people in the real world with all sorts of hardware/software combos and different ways of using things so they get to see if anyone can break it, or if the solution they thought was just wonderful everyone else thought really sucks.
Or if you are Microsoft, then it’s the first release version, and everyone gets to be the guinea pigs…

Yeah Jazz – happy to toss in 20c worth.
IE7 and FF on XP at home. XP and IE6 at work. Use Google Reader RSS feeds. Almost zero HTML knowledge, so will be looking for wysiwyg interface features…

“What’s a beta test? (Scuse my ignorance).”

Ignore these guys, they are leading you up the garden path. With the advent of DVD technology Beta testing is no longer that common. But in it’s heyday it was used to make sure the conversion from VHS had worked successfully.

It just means using a new site or program or game with a small group of others, before it goes live to the world, to see if there are any remaining bugs in the programs etc.

Forgot to say I’m running Firefox 3 Beta 2 which is going well very stable.

GnT: the important bits of that definition are “last stage of testing” and “outside the company for real-world exposure”.

@jono1: I use Vista and will happily run IE7
Then may God have mercy on your soul.

I’m in

@GnT – google it some more then. I’m going to nominate you as the village idiot for the beta test though, every testing process needs a village idiot.

I’ll test.
Have a long work history in QA, software testing and support.

DarkLadyWolfMother8:24 am 10 Jan 08

I’m happy to help if you want. Firefox 2 on Linux, Firefox 2 and home, and IE 7 if you really want 😉

From Maelinar’s informative link: “Beta testing is the last stage of testing, and normally can involve sending the product to beta test sites outside the company for real-world exposure or offering the product for a free trial download over the Internet. Beta testing is often preceded by a round of testing called alpha testing.”

Oh, so beta testing comes after alpha testing and involves beta test sites. You’ve clarified the issue completely.

I’ll test
Sony TZ28 Lappy with Solid State hardrive Vista and Firefox. Also Centos Linux with Firefox
Also firefox from a TrueCrypt USB flash drive lol

I should add that I have a Palm PDA, linux with konqueror (basically the same as safari but there could be some small differences) and an iPod touch as well.

Happy to take part – I use Vista and will happily run IE7, Firefox, Opera 9, Safari 3 beta and Mobile Safari (on iPod touch).

What is a Beta Test – Google 0.12 seconds.

What’s a beta test? (Scuse my ignorance).

Running something on a mac. Guinea pig me up.

el ......VNBerlinaV87:06 pm 09 Jan 08

Happy to be a tester. Also running a mix of Safari and Firefox.

Yeah, I am happy to help. Windows SP2 Firefox (although I can also try it out in IE and Safari)

I’m interested to help out. I use Safari 3 on the Mac as well as Firefox.
