All,

I am interested, there has been a plethora of comments, mostly against (how can there be a problem with a day off?) in regards to the upcoming holiday tomorrow.

After close to three weeks of sitting in meetings listening to our esteemed business leaders speaking about this at length, I wondering what the dear RiotACT rabble thinks of all this (Macroeconomic principles not withstanding i.e. @$300mil missing from small businesses in the ACT, which does suck arse)?, and more importantly how many people are NOT backing Purple bloody Moon.

I think if you’re hanging out for Melbourne Cup Day for camaraderie and that has to come from doing somthing with people you work with you should probably have a long hard look at yourself!

Maybe we should make Xmas a work day so we can have some fun camaraderie with our bosses!

A Canberra public holiday on Melbourne Cup sux. Chris Peters is right. A lot of people missing out on the camaraderie of the day.

I’m with you sepi – it’s un-Australian to whinge about getting a day off. Sure there’ll always be a couple of dipstick chicken shop owners who get dudded because – well hell, they’re chicken shop owners, not rocket surgeons so they’re always going to get dudded – I’ll try to remember to get all teary for them while I lie in bed enjoying a coffee tomorrow morning.

I can’t’ believe people are whinging about a day off.
I can’t wait to sleep in, then dress up, find a silly hat and go to a party to watch the race.
It’s a great idea.

How many people actually went to the Trades and Labour Day, anyway?

Everyone talks about it, but I’ve never met anyone who had ever been to one.

Won’t somebody PLEASE think of the chicken?

All this hooha about a day off. I personally am not effected by the loss of the ‘illegal trades and labour’ day picnic, but when I was entitled to the day off, used to enjoy the occasion. I seem to recollect the same bleating used to carry on then, possibly by the same people now..

How ever did small businesses survive when NOTHING opened on a public holiday?

anyhoo, if Kevin07 gets up, wins the race so to speak, then maybe the trades and labour picnic day can be restored. M/C day would be a good day for it.

Tomorrow I am going to slob around the house, mow the grass and demolish a stubby or 10.

So I says ‘red M&M, blue M&M, they all end up the same.’

Seriously – why is this holiday such a disaster for business compared to any other holiday? Apart from the poor guy trying to sell chickens that is.

chicken little, chicken little the sky is falling. again. baaaa-aaaa.

s4anta asked, just telling it like it is. and i bought a chicken to bake meself, to take on a noice pickanic by the lake with me girl and me dog and a bottle of grape juice and away, away from the silly fuss about poor horses being whipped, like crowds in a frenzy…

apparently a horse will win, can’t say which. mebbe no. 13 (is that unlucky?) whose name i neither know nor care to. isn’t purple bloody moon, is it??

what are your plans, ingee? party hard and flutter the mortgage on a nag, then?

If you’re so worried about the chicken man Astro, why dont you go and buy one of bloody chickens to enjoy on your day off? It’ll fill in the time while your waiting for someone else to start another thread on this topic so you can keep bleating about how the world is ending.

as i mentioned in another thread on this topic, i wrote to the CM on this a few weeks ago ang got a response back from Mr Barr, who alleged the community had, contrary to my assertion, been broadly consulted.

seems the attached article in the CT would back me up, as would my conversations with small business owners over the last few days, in particular the poor chicken shop in city markets; closed last year cup day for renovations and as at saturday, had nil nought zeron none orders for chickens for tomorrow, when with all the new offices about had expected a bit of a bonanza.

consultations con-shmultations indeed! i’m with the business dude in the article and will be writing once again to Mr Barrrrrr and his CM.
