ACT Policing is investigating the theft of an external wall from the heritage-listed Tralee Slab Hut in Hume.

Approximately 35 wooden “slabs” which comprise an external wall of the hut have been removed. Each of the hand-cut slabs is approximately 2 metres in length, 250mm wide and 100mm deep. The slabs had been secured together vertically to create one wall of the hut.

The wall is believed to have been removed from the hut sometime over the past three weeks. A contract had been awarded for the hut’s refurbishment last month.

Police are seeking any witnesses who may have heard or seen any suspicious or unusual behaviour around the hut, in Tralee Street, Hume, or may have seen material being removed from the site. Anyone who can assist the investigation is urged to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

They won’t find ’em. It’s *cold* this time of year.

Thats Low! each slab takes some time to make and the right timber is hard to find.

The volenteer group restoring the hut is the kosiosco huts association and this will be a major setback for them.

Firewood!
