Firefighters are responding to reports of a fire at the corner of Wynne Street and McBryde Crescent Wanniassa.

Update to follow.

6:07pm Sunday 20 May 2012

ACT Fire & Rescue have quickly extinguished the blaze in the detached building.

The fire damage has been minimal but the impact of the smoke more widespread.

Firefighters are now ventilating the property before investigating the cause.

UPDATE 21/05/12 09:27: This in from the police:

ACT Policing is investigating a suspicious fire which took place yesterday (May 20) at Erindale College.

About 6pm, police responded to a number of reports of a fire at the college. The fire started in a small building, which had recently undergone renovation and was located away from the main campus.

Upon police arrival, ACT Fire and Rescue were in attendance and had extinguished the fire. The building sustained a significant amount of smoke damage with an estimate of $20,000 to repair.

I hope they catch this firebug before he hurts someone. I live in the area, it’s very unsettling to know that some sociopath is running around trying to set my suburb on fire. If the police don’t catch him soon I’ll considering patrolling some of the more combustible parts of the suburb myself.

The caretakers cottage near the tennis courts seemed to be well alight from the amount of smoke that billowed from it just past 6pm. They had 3 engines and police had blocked off the road onto McBryde so they were worried.
