A 20-year-old Wanniassa man was arrested and charged yesterday (Saturday, June 9) for stalking and impersonating a police officer.

Police will allege that the man contacted a woman on numerous occasions over the past week after she had requested him to cease contact with her. Following this, the man contacted a business on City Walk in Civic yesterday, claiming to be a police officer to try to gain information on one of their employees, the same woman.

Police arrested the man after he attended the business around 11.45am yesterday. He was taken to the ACT Watch House, where he was charged with two counts of impersonating a police officer and one count of stalking.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow morning (Monday, June 11).

Superintendent Paul Shakeshaft praised the swift arrest by police yesterday, highlighting the seriousness of stalking and impersonating a police officer.

“Police arrested the man within half an hour of receiving reports from the business yesterday. This shows that ACT Policing treats matters like this very seriously and if you are caught, you will face criminal charges,” Superintendent Shakeshaft said.

You’re not from around here, are you?

The posts that offend you (and would offend most people) are par for the course, little, pathetic men who talk big on the internet.

Going for something like a five post nutbag award here, but I’ve just noticed upon re-reading the OP that that cop responsible for dealing with this gig is the implausibly yet stupendously named Superintendent Shakeshaft.

I’d like to invent a machine that was fuelled by irony. There’s enough of that in this world to power our civilization in perpetuity.

Without knowing the facts on this matter although going on the face of the story above, the police officers handling this could have given the person a gentle warning on his own leaving it at that.

My husband of 20 years asked me out as a customer when I worked in an office 25 yrs ago in a retail office and at the time I was not interested in him. I still gave it a go zooming off fishing and spotlighting with him, travelling and creating experiences, he did all the stalking for many months.

I have had someone interested in me for some time doing a similar thing – these days life is fastpaced and difficult for young people to get to know other young prospectives; I admire the young fellow for his ‘action’ where the law was brought in and may well have been taken too far.

Unless the poor guy had schizophrenia or was a pervert the police should not have apprehended nor charged him.

At any rate, this guy will have his opportunity to explain his story and may have grounds to sue for assumptions made by being charged for trying to simply romance a girl he has a crush on who never gave him an opportunity.

That’s naive.
How would you know if he had schizophrenia, what if he didn’t know it himself? Wouldn’t that sort of testing come via a court when he has his hearing and they demand reports?
My friend’s daughter had an issue with a guy at senior school…he was 18, she was 15.
Nice lad, totally normal, bit of a pest…she treated him well and told him she wasn’t interested. Then he started pestering her, waiting for her, calling her, texting her.

She again told him very firmly she wasn’t interested and that she would call the police “next” time if he didn’t leave her alone.
A few days later he was waiting outside school for her in the morning, ran up from behind, jumped on her back and stabbed her 9 times in the face and neck with a kitchen knife, scarring her for life…he was apprehended and got 13 years for attempted murder.
You simply cannot take the risk these days, and pretending to be a police officer to get information from her employer (like what…where she lived?) is way over the line and needs to be put through the system, just so they can give him a bloody good examination.

Link?

Based on the facts as stated in the OP, anybody who would try to defend the actions of this dude has their head right up their fundamental orifice. Gooterz and scorpio, I’m looking at you.

The perp contacted the woman on numerous occasions after she requested that he leave her alone. Poor form, under the most charitable interpretation. But he then called her workplace and IMPERSONATED A COPPER to obtain information about her. Undoubtedly illegal, wacky and frightening for the woman being subject to this nonsense.

If that isn’t totally out of line, I dunno what is.

So you like most will just take the chicks word on it. I’ve seen on numerious occasions how this ‘game’ works. Chicks prey on insecure guys and make them think their keen. When she does find a bad boy she really likes she plays the ‘hes stalking me card’ to get more attention from other friends. Shes decided she doesnt want to deal with being the baddy so her friends convince her that hes a creep and stalking and lies about every interaction saying he wouldnt leave her alone. More likely they were probably friends just she didnt want to take it further and didnt want her friends to know.

As for the cop thing. Doesn’t everyone know cops carry badges and need warrents let alone look older than 20 and be in uniform? Sounds like the guy is just really bad at sarcasm.
Should we go and arrest all the stripper for pretending to be cops too, or everyone that stands inline at doughtnut king and joking makes cop jokes?

Obiviously they had some history, how did he have a method to contact her/ know where she worked.

Sadly for most guys in similar suituation theres no law against being a bitch.

Effing lol it it mr Gillespie. You are mentally gross dude. Get help.

One definition of ‘infatuation’ which I believe is involved in the above story;
noun . 1. the state of being infatuated. 2. the act of infatuating. 3. foolish or all-absorbing passion or an instance of this: a mere infatuation that will not last.

Those who judge a young man infatuated with a girl who carried out his act of passion are either black and white thinkers with no grey matter in between and/or politically correct, unromantic, boring, non passionate, incompassionate, bland individuals who have in all probability never put themselves out to follow their heart as opposed to their minds and get to know a possible soulmate in their lives.

Guaranteed, these two people will cross paths later on down the track in the most positive way. Am getting she will be embarrassed and apologetic for bringing in the law.

I’ve seen paintings by Salvador Dali with melting clocks being eaten by ants and stuff like that. They are far less surreal than this nonsense.

Let me clear. What you have said is bogus. Men can’t harass women for companionship or sex. They are not entitled to do that. It is wrong. They can’t impersonate police officers to obtain confidential information from employers. That is wrong. It sucks. It’s not simply childish foolishness. It’s not excused by calling it infatuation and brushing it off.

What this man did was wrong, and he deserves all the calumny that is heaped upon him.

Jeez, harden up. The guy was just being romantic… your definition of it anyway.

I am just horrified at some of the responses on this! Where does it say she lead him on?

It clearly says “the man contacted a woman on numerous occasions over the past week after she had requested him to cease contact with her. Following this, the man contacted a business on City Walk in Civic yesterday, claiming to be a police officer to try to gain information on one of their employees, the same woman. “

This kind of behaviour is NOT on under ANY circumstances. Something similar happened to my sister when she was in her early twenties. I was with her when she met this guy, she was polite but made it clear she wasn’t interested – He followed her back to her house (about a 10 minute walk from the pub), she asked me to stay the night because she was worried about what he would do then. Have no idea how he got the phone number but he did. This guy would ring and turn up on the door step at all hours. In the end she moved in with a friend to get away from him – He then showed up at her work (He had followed her to find out where it was) and THREATENED her boss to try and get her new address. She was terrified! This was only 20 years ago and the only thing the cops took seriously were the threats against the boss! She had the POLICE back then telling her that she shouldn’t have been at the pub in the FIRST place if she wasn’t looking for some action!

Some men are incapable of taking no for an answer, they feel they have some kind of “right” to harrass women until they give in. I am glad the police have finally started taking this kind of rubbish seriously! When will people understand that NO means NO!

I’m not judging him, I’ve been a dickhead in love before, but I am damn sure judging his actions, and his actions were creepy.

My condolences Jim, I have a daughter now in her twenties who experienced someone interested in her too that stalked – she sorted it out promptly without the assistance of police (I am far from naive in that I have mixed with most of the young Canberrans over 20 years socially, through work, in addition to voluntary community work). There are ways and strategies to deal with kids going through infatuation and stalking, many girls sort it out themselves nipping it in the bud without the involvement of police. Some of my daughter’s friends who experienced a stalker in their lives discovered the majority give up after a few months and move on with their lives.

Sure, there are young people with a mental condition who do require police intervention and this may be one of those cases.

Where does it say she led him on?

Not the first time, definitely not the last, but some of you are really sad freaks.

Yeah, poor guy…

Good to know that my capacity to be disappointed in segments of humanity hasn’t been completely killed off.

It seems the person at fault here is the woman for leading the boy on, being evasive and acting like a tease. If she’d met up with him in the first place and had sex with him, he would have realised she was a dud root and gone away on his own accord. Now she’s jumped up and down and got the police involved and will have to endure a gruelling court case which will be all over the media. Who’s the fool now?

Fixed that for you. And that requirement goes for a couple of people posting in this thread too…

Um… Why would suffering from a mental illness make him more deserving of incarceration and conviction? And we don’t have much to go on at all, for all we know he could well be a gibbering knife-wielding nutjob (which is what I assume you mean by ‘schizophrenic’, even if it’s not what schizophrenia really is). Nor do we know what information he was trying to gain from her employer. Maybe it was just her phone number which, sure, is innocent enough, but he might have been after her address, which is much less so.

The impersonating the cop is a fair call but I would be interested in what they class as stalking as its not explicably mentioned. These days the modern female complains that after meeting them later sending them facebook request is stalking.
Also as just I just recently happened in the workplace (where i was neither party), the lady decided to lead on a fellow colleague and enjoyed his gifts and his support. Only to break up the friendship when she got a new boyfriend and claim to management that he was stalking because she refused to talk to him so he started calling her.

Perhaps like most things in the law today its not what you were doing it more what they think you were doing, after judging you on your looks. Only ugly people can be stalkers. If its a hot person its ‘omg they’re totally into you’.

I think you might have missed the bit where she “requested him to cease contact with her”. Most men would have taken the hint. What this guy did is just creepy.

I would also like to make the observation that if you are wondering why you don’t have much luck with the ladies then perhaps it might be in your approach.
