Want a free tat? Go to prison!

The Canberra Times has an intriguing piece on musings by the Chief Minister on introducing a “safe tattooing” service to the prison, possibly as a reward for good behaviour, to reduce blood bourne infections.

If being covered in tats is once again a prison thing will this reduce their fashion appeal in wider society?

Kinda wish people would stop being cynical about measures to stop infection. Guess who pays for the expensive health care and medication if they do get sick?

I’m guessing the same people who pay for their housing, children, methadone, dole and transport (feel free to add anything I may have left out).

In return we get robbed, threatened or assaulted (feel free to add anything I may have left out).

I like your work.

Free internet, free gym membership, free tattoos, where do I sign up?

What about the swimming pool, sauna and massages. Oh yeah, they’re fictional too…

Why does this look dumb to me, despite the common sense infection-control object buried somewhere in it?
Is it giving prisoners something that people in the community have to pay for? Is it involving the sometimes questionable people in the tatt trade in something that will get them in contact with prisoners? Is it giving people who are already disadvantaged a marker that tends – along with smoking these days – to scream that a person is a loser/bogan (or, at best, an NRL player which is much the same thing)? Is it the near inevitability that at some point something will go wrong and someone will end up sick with the ACT being liable?
The syringes at least recognised an addiction, but anyone addicted to tattooing probably needs the service of a psychiatrist.

You want to sign up for your “free membership” go right ahead. Obviously, you haven’t read the fine print d**khead.

According to you, no one ‘signs up’ by committing a crime anyway. It is always the fault of society, the police or some other reason as to why the poor little cherubs were forced into breaking the law.

FFS. What next in the name of “preventing blood-borne diseases” in the pokey – a lineup of free prostitutes – sorry, sex workers (of any orientation – don’t want to be exclude any preferences of the inmates) on call 24/7 to end the time honoured tradition of rampant prison buggery?

Yep. This is getting out of hand.

After katy’s attempt to arm inmates with fresh needles, I can’t see her going along with it though.

I don’t agree with your first sentence’s portrayal of NSP. Regardless, an NSP in AMC is now very unlikely and the government will need to put something on the table instead. Odds-on this proposed tattooing service is that something.

If this is the ‘something’ that satisfies the apparent obsession with being seen beyond our borders as the most progressive and liberal of the states and territories, (a little Switzerland if you will), then god speed to it. Perhaps we can then look forward to genuinely innovative and unique responses to the ACTs social ills

And a Chief Minister who regularly advocates on behalf of hard drug users and people who flout the laws of the Territory! What’s not to attract more low-life druggie crims to the ACT?

I am so totally in favour of this. …Get the inmates tattoo-ed, make sure the tatts are large and are on an exposed part of the body, map the tatts in a database with the prisoner’s ID details, and the police will be very pleased..

+1 i think it’s rather clever

+2 This would actually be useful.

After katy’s attempt to arm inmates with fresh needles, I can’t see her going along with it though.

Would it kill our politicians to actually ask the prison guards/nurses/chaplains etc what needs to be done? rather than just condemning them for not being starry eyed romantics?

This signals the death of moves to introduce a prison-based needle exchange.

Great idea! That is, if the (cough) service providers did not get their establishments firebombed by commercial competitors in the interim.

I would love to see a list of ‘preferred providers’ for tendering on tattoo services. The probity checks should be a lot of fun. ‘Skull’ attests that his mate ‘Donger’ is a chap of the highest character. And if they don’t believe it, they can always ask ‘Cracko’ or ‘Fungus’, or perhaps the wealthy property owner who is the president of the MCC.

Brilliant.

It’s unlikely that it being part of prison culture would reduce a tattoos appeal. After all the “dacks at your knees, jocks at your armpits” look that is still so improbably popular originated in prison

I admit my first sentence was facetious, but my second sentence doesn’t preclude infection control measures. Infection control shouldn’t be the main, or only, effort though.

It’s OK – they tend to die young.

Mix dope with the ink and get a tattoo and a hit with a safe needle – two birds with one stone(d)!

How about getting serious about stopping both the drugs and the tattoo guns?

Will the money be coming from the public artworks budget?

I am so totally in favour of this. Clever Katie – and straight out of the Third Reich!

Get the inmates tattoo-ed, make sure the tatts are large and are on an exposed part of the body, map the tatts in a database with the prisoner’s ID details, and the police will be very pleased.

Are there any nano-gps devices that could be implanted along with the ink? Better still …
