Simon Corbell is asking for people willing to take the heat for his carbon action targets (note: there are no plans):

Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water, Simon Corbell, has called for nominations to the ACT Climate Change Council that will help guide the Territory towards carbon neutrality.

“I encourage anyone committed to addressing climate change who has appropriate experience and knowledge to nominate themselves for the ACT Climate Change Council and play an active role in supporting our community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change impacts,” Mr Corbell said.

“The ACT Climate Change Council will have up to nine members with a broad range of skills to help identify and address barriers to achieving a dynamic and low carbon economy and society.

Must enjoy buzzword bingo.

Applications close Christmas Eve.

The first step towards carbon-neutrality could be to get the ACT’s bloated army of 20,000+ public servants thinned-down somewhat.

I think this would actually have the reverse effect. In making them lose all that fat, the fat cells would be metabolised by the body, thus freeing up the carbon in the fat, which is the reverse effect.

We have completely useless bunches of them, such as the “Human Rights Commission”, who’ve used their abysmal lack of talents to produce Australia’s most unsafe prison.
And then there’s the “Chief Minister’s Department” whose sole function is to produce PR, spin, dirt and lies. Why am I paying for that?

I think you’ve got a little sidetracked here, how is sacking public servants going to make us carbon neutral? At best we’d just be exporting the problem to a jurisdiction with better employment prospects.

Breda, “what” and “why” are the questions that are being properly studied by dedicated professionals. You may have been mis-led by the Murdoch media campaign to confuse people. Remember Murdoch’s “Invade Iraq and we’ll get oil at $20/barrel”? Well, he’s dedicating his billions to lying again to those silly enough to listen. If you want to know about Climate Change, forget journalists and politicians, read what the scientists are researching:

Our collective knowledge was, as at 2007:
WHAT: http://www.ipcc.ch/publications_and_data/ar4/syr/en/spms1.html
WHY: http://www.ipcc.ch/publications_and_data/ar4/syr/en/spms2.html

Of course, since then things have changed: the IPCC projections were hopelessly conservative, eg, the sea-level rise is now projected to be closer to 1m by 2100, not 40cm.

As for what good a committee can do – what a silly question.
It is presumably a forum for clever people to share ideas and nut out detail which can be presented to the ACT government to help them develop programs.

Buzzword Bingo?

I propose that that we leverage the holistic paradigm going forward.

Do I get the job?

“So, attempting to do anything environmentally positive is utterly pointless and we shouldn’t bother trying. Got it.”

The bicycling part would be positive. The rest would be another feelgood impost on punters by the we-know-what’s-best-for you crowd, paid for by taxpayers and those who can least afford it.

George, if you get your gym off the ground, I want the ‘renewable’ part of the action – a pie and hot dog stall outside.

Being a member of the Greens… though left wing labor would also be acceptable.
(Relevant experience is optional. Ill informed ideology and passion will make up for it.)

My comment relates to the utter futility of a bunch of people sitting in a room in Civic once a month to think up ways of making our energy more expensive. Because that is what they will be doing.

Jeez. You’d want a large appearance fee for turning up to those meetings….not sure if even then it would be worth it.

How about we start a business whereby we get a huge room, and fill it with exercise bikes connected to generators, connected to the electricity grid. We claim the feedin tariff as cash (ok, it’s a special case). Then, we open up a competition to the public to find out:
a) who can generate the most electricity; and
b) who can lose the most weight.

We use the cash from the feed in tariff as prizes for people on this basis.

End result – some renewable energy is created, some people get to trim their fat cans, and we raise awareness.

C’mon Stanhope – do something useful. You can call it “George’s Gym”.

How about we just get a furnace, hook a turbine up to it, and throw fat people into it? Fat people are a renewable energy source, right?

They certainly generate a lot of heat – something we need think carefully about when considering global warming. I’m not really sure it would be renewable, though.

Well, I’m really encouraged to see that there are at least three wise men left who can see through the wicked and insane conspiracy of 95% of all the world’s trained scientists to fool honest folk that there’s actually something going on with the climate. We’d all be lost without this kind of almost godlike wisdome, wouldn’t we?

are they still trying to push this carbon crap through?

They should all be forced to sit on stationary bicycles that power generators during meetings, with a minimum output requirement. At least that would provide some relief for the embattled energy consumers they will be aiming to screw even harder.

Appropriate experience?
