Wanted, child care answers in Canberra?

Afternoon all…

Why is it seemingly so difficult to find places for child care in the ACT?

Let us know if you are on a wait list like us, and how long you have been waiting?

If there are over 500 new places that are / have been approved then why is the demand so high still… why because most of these places wont be online until works are complete on the renovations / extentions / new builds.

That is not going to happen overnight !!!

Who agrees we need places NOW!!!

Who will show their support for that ?

Look forward to you responding…

You can’t take on more children if there are no staff to care for them. Increased staff to children ration and higher qualifications required all make a very difficult environment for childcare centres to manage. Happily we are not too far away from losing a few childcare costs as well – yippee.

I can’t believe you actually took that bait. O_O

…because staying home and raising a developmentally challenged sociophobic loner is SO worth it when you calculate how much money you’ve saved.

Because it’s impossible to challenge your child(ren) developmentally and socially when you don’t use childcare?

Childcare exposes kids to a greater variety of activities and higher degree of socialisation than you could reasonably expect to do yourself. If you’re circle of friends don’t have kids or you don’t know your neighbours well enough to rock up on their door step and ask for a play date then it would be very difficult.

I look forward to your detailed plan showing how child care places can be created instantly without accompanying infrastructure.

I’m thinking refugee camps for babies and toddlers made out of blue tarpaulins. Ditches instead of tiny toilets. And a number system to use the slide and sandpit.

Well we are actually looking forward to the end of this year when we will gratefully relinquish our boys day care slot. At $1800 per month the cost is crippling, that will be $1800/month going off our mortgage instead.

We’re on a waiting list – have been since early pregnancy, bub is now 7 months. Told this morning possibly Feb!

I’d encourage people who have found a place to remove their names from waiting lists they no longer need to be on.

There’s more to it than just money.

Wait for it………..

Aaaaaaaand attack !

We were on a waitlist from the time I was three months pregnant (about a year ago) and just heard last week that we have a place waiting for us in January. This was for a very popular centre so it’s possible the wait is shorter at other centres. We had our names on lists at other centres too though so that means everyone on those lists has now moved up a spot.
If you can wait that long, your chances improve substantially in January as that’s when the kids who are moving into pre-school and school leave, and everyone moves up a “class”. If not, there are usually places available in family daycare but there is a lot of variation between the carers.

One of the other issues is that as most centres give priority to siblings of kids already in their care, if it’s your first child it can be tricky to get in as you’re competing with babies who may not be conceived yet!
