Hi Everyone,

I am working on a project for Weston Park in Yarralumla and am finding, through basic googling and conversations with people, that there doesn’t seem to be many photos of the playground area of Weston Park between the 1970s and today. I am looking specifically for pictures of the climbing towers, the treehouses and any other photos of things that are no longer at the Park.

I remember playing there as a child, and have fond memories of the fun play equipment there, but it has all changed since then. If anybody can help provide pics that would be fantastic. Please email them to canberrapics@hotmail.com with your name and date (for copyright).

Any other general information people might have such as demolition dates and the introduction of the new play equipment would also be useful. Thanks so much!

Hi,
would it be at all possible for someone to send me some of the photos of the treehouses? i went to the park yesterday for the first time in my adult life to find them destroyed, last time i was there i was too young to properly remember. saddening.

I’ve sent the ones I sent to Tadpole directly to you JB (as I have NO clue how to post them up!) – feel free to put up.

LisaB that would be great – I can still work on the report whilst collecting more photos. I would love to know building dates and if you know of the construction of any of the other structures in that area.

I’ll see what I can do about sending on photos – maybe i’ll just send them to the RiotAct Canberra pics so everyone here can see them.

Thanks everyone!

+1 to all the requests for you to share – would love to see anything you manage to unearth.

What’s your time frame?
My family built and ran the maze for over 20 years. We have photos of it being built but I’m not sure where to find them. My parents would be able to help you, but they are currently overseas and won’t be back till mid October.

Hi,
Is there any chance of looking at these photos people are sending in?
maybe picasa or photobucket etc?
I always enjoy seeing old pics of Canberra before OH&S stuck it ugly head up…

the older ones will be online but there are thousands of hard copy prints in the Pictorial collection room, filed under topic…yeah I know old school not digital not as easy to search…but interesting all the same

Thanks for the responses – Miz those photos are perfect I assume they are ok to use in a report (I will state you as the photographer)

I have searched through Trove and the National Library and Archives but they are generally much older photos and mostly of the nursery but not much on the playground.

The more pics I can get the better. I’d love a feel for how the maze looked too – and I remember that “tall, totemic structure of treated pine logs at one end of the ponds” It did seem pretty dangerous but it was still fun to climb!

Thanks again all-

Hey there, my ex and I got married in the treehouses at Weston Park, I have a certain policy on photos and exes, but I’ll forward this on to her and she may be able to help.

Weston park was always one of my favourite places to go as a youngster. It certainly was nowhere near my kid’s favourite, well, I reckon almost boring now.
I hope they breath some life back into it soon.
Would also love to see some of the pics you may gather when there was fun to be had, Tadpole8. Good luck.

Hello Tadpoles.

I hope I’m not alone in wishing your project every success. Weston Park holds intense and pleasant memories for me. To the very young that place seemed of almost limitless extent and full of wonders. I remember a large maze, the lakes-within-a-lake of the ponds, a tall, totemic structure of treated pine logs at one end of the ponds and a puzzling space-ship-like building painted in Mondrian colours with little corridors, ramps and railings. All removed now, presumably for ‘safety’ reasons.

Years later I was saddened to see the loss of the treehouses and other landmarks that once made it a special place for a kid to explore. As to my opinion of the park’s amenities in its current form, I’m with ConanofCooma – although it’s hard to think of a more beautiful site for a park in the entire country. A little bit of that old magic persists.

Another person worth asking is Heide Smith who photographed Canberra and its surrounds prolifically in the 1980s. Several books of her work at that time have been published. She has a Web site with contact details.

I hope you can share the results of your work with RA – it will be appreciated by many. And perhaps Miz’s photos can be put up as part of ‘Images of Canberra’ on this site.

National Library, Pictorial Collection has many photographs of Canberra locations.

Some probably avail through the TROVE website

NLA also has the personal photograph album of TCG Weston, who park is named after.

It was all excellent… And they tore it all down and replaced it with crap.

Hi there – I have forwarded some photos from the early 1980s to you. I miss those treehouses *sigh*
