War memorial not a major attraction?

The SMH’s Steve Meacham has a strange review of the Brassey’s hotel and restaurant which makes peculiar mention of its location:

In terms of location, it’s ideal. It’s within easy walking distance of all the major tourist attractions – the National Gallery, Old Parliament House, New Parliament House, The National Science and Technology Centre, Lake Burley Griffin – and the restaurants of Manuka

Hmm, so the Naitonal Museum and the War Memorial are no longer “major tourist attractions” but the restaurants of Manuka are?

my sentimonies terubo… but then again, I have always been a cynic.

And in order to figure THAT out, Spitfire3, you have to figure out the critic’s motives in the first place. Whose nose in whose trough.
PS: I have never been called a cynic.

Snahon, of course you’d rather go and experience something yourself and make a personal judgement. But unless you have unlimited money and time, you can’t experience everything first-hand. A critic’s role is not to tell you what to think, it’s to give you as a potential customer more info to help you pick those experiences that you will find more rewarding than the rest. You have to figure out which critics are worth giving credence to.

exacery JTK. Same goes with all “critics”. its all about their take on things. I’d rather go and experience something myself and make a personal judgement then rely on a critic to tell me what to think.

Reviews are entirely subjective and dificult to quantify.

Typically, not even worth the paper they are printed on.

Who cares.

If I was getting a freebie at the Brassey (like Meacham probably did), I wouldn’t be walking anywhere. Just eating and drinking to excess.

What about Canberra’s main tourist attarction Cockington Green?

Good article on the whole but true that aside from the new Barton annexe it does look a little ‘jaded’.

Would you walk to the AWM from the Brassey ?

I wouldn’t.

what a strange thing to pick on.
it’s certainly not “easy walking distance” from the brassey to the national museum! nor the war memorial (for most people).
also, he’s not saying that the restaurants of manuka are major tourist attractions – he says “easy walking distance to the major tourist attractions … *and* the restaurants of manuka.”

As Bill Bryson pointed out in his “Down Under” book, the various tourist attractions are just too far apart to be easily walkable. I don’t think the average punter would consider a walk from the Brassey to the war Memorial to be an “easy” walk.
Having said that, most Canberrans are of the opinion that being 2 hours from both the snow and the beach is convenient.
