Waramanga Servo redevelopment?

Does anyone know how long you have to wait before building on old servo sites?

I thought there was a seven (?) year wait but the scaffolding is up and Blackshaw are advertising units.

The servo hasn’t even been closed for a year so I don’t know how they can be doing this.

I know I wouldn’t touch a unit with the proverbial ten foot pole as I’ve also been told the site leaks petrol.

The Holder servo was redeveloped around 7-8 years ago into units. After the servo had been demolished and fenced off, signs appeared on the fence from the developer saying he’d been told he had to wait seven years regardless of remediation work before it could be built on, and asking if residents really wanted an abandoned servo site there for the next 6.5 years. Well we didn’t. 20 of 21 resident submissions to the ACT Govt favoured the site being tested after remediation (removing fuel tanks, digging out a lot of soil and clay) and redevelopment expedited if it passed. It was, it did, and the units were built. A whole lot better than a fenced off pile of rubble. Some sites may be more polluted than others, so perhaps they have to wait no matter how much digging out they do. If you’re concerned about the Waramanga site why not ask the gov’t for a response re site testing, whether or not you plan to live there?

Not sure about how long, but they will have to remediate the site which means removing all the fuel tanks and all the soil that is affected by the petrol/hydrocarbons. If there was leakage they have to either dig the dirt out and ‘farm’it till the hydrocarbons evaporate or dispose of the spoil and fill the clean hole. it isn’t simple. They sold Duffy off the plan 1-2 years agio and they haven’t even started any building on that site yet but that may be the builder or lack of interest rather than anything to do with the site.
