Environment and Sustainable Development is celebrating a reduction of water quality warnings in Lake Tuggeranong to “low”.
Lake Tuggeranong has had a ‘warning’ alert level since March 2012 as a precautionary measure after blue-green algae were detected in areas of the lake. ACT Health has confirmed that the algal counts are now at levels where there is generally no major health risk.
‘Warning’ signs will be removed and regular monitoring of the lake will continue. Environment Protection and Water Regulation will continue to consult with ACT Health to assess the condition of Lake Tuggeranong.
“To ensure public safety is maintained anyone who enters the lake is urged to remain alert,” said Mr Walters.
“If people are swimming in the lake and see green scum or material which they think may be an algal bloom in the water, they should get out immediately. If a suspected algal bloom is present, people should not drink, swim or allow their pets near the water,” said Mr Walters.
